My stepbrother stabbed me at 2 a.m., but Jocelyn had been seeing warning signs for months before that terrifying night. She had learned that the people living beneath the same roof could sometimes be the very people she needed to fear. Whenever she tried to explain that something felt wrong, however, her mother Linda dismissed her concerns as paranoia and found another innocent explanation for Brandon’s behavior.
One evening at dinner, Jocelyn told her mother that Brandon had been inside her bedroom. Linda casually claimed he had only been searching for his phone charger. Jocelyn wasn’t convinced. Her dresser drawer—the one containing her private journal—had been left open. Brandon, her stepbrother of two years, calmly claimed he’d knocked three times before entering and had merely bumped into furniture while looking for an outlet in the dark.
Her stepfather Philip immediately supported Brandon. He told Jocelyn she needed to stop being so suspicious because they were a family now, and families were supposed to trust each other. But the conversation stayed with Jocelyn. The following afternoon, she sat across from her best friend Valerie at their usual booth in the Riverside Diner and admitted that the situation at home was becoming increasingly unsettling.

Valerie had already noticed the pattern. She believed Jocelyn’s mother constantly took Brandon’s side and seemed to have forgotten about her own daughter after marrying Philip.
Then Jocelyn revealed something even more troubling.
Pills from her prescription sleep medication had disappeared. When she confronted her family about them, her mother suggested Jocelyn might have taken the pills herself and simply forgotten. Valerie immediately recognized how disturbing that explanation was. Jocelyn wondered whether she had somehow miscounted, but the uneasy feeling remained.
Valerie suggested installing a lock on the bedroom door. That wasn’t possible. Philip had a strict rule against locked doors in his house because, according to him, families shouldn’t hide things from one another.
So Valerie suggested something else: a camera.
Jocelyn still had an old iPhone that worked. That night, she decided to use it as security inside her bedroom. If her instincts were wrong, perhaps the recording would prove it. But if Brandon really was entering her room without permission, she would finally have evidence no one could dismiss.
Three days later, at 1:47 in the morning, the camera captured something far worse than Jocelyn expected.
Brandon entered her bedroom while she slept.
The recording showed him going through her backpack and taking $40 from her wallet. He read pages from her private journal. Then he did something that frightened Jocelyn even more: Brandon stood silently at the foot of her bed and watched her sleep for almost seven minutes.
Jocelyn showed the footage to Valerie the following day. Her friend’s hands shook as she watched. This was no longer a vague suspicion or something Brandon could easily explain away. Valerie urged Jocelyn to show her mother immediately.
But Jocelyn hesitated.
After everything that had already happened, she wasn’t sure her mother would believe her—even with video evidence. Valerie insisted the proof was right there on the screen.
That evening, Jocelyn connected the old iPhone to the family’s living-room television while Linda and Philip sat on their leather sectional. Philip’s expression hardened as soon as Jocelyn said the footage concerned Brandon.
Jocelyn pressed play.
The large television screen showed Brandon’s face, his hands searching through her belongings, and finally the disturbing image of him standing over her while she slept.
When the recording ended, the room fell completely silent.
Then Philip spoke—and what he said made Jocelyn’s heart drop.
