My wife’s traumatic accident eventually changed everything, but our story began years earlier when we met in high school. She was the first girl I ever confessed my feelings to, and I was lucky enough to learn that she felt the same way. After that, we were practically inseparable. High school wasn’t exactly the happiest period of my life, but having her beside me made those difficult days easier. There was something about her presence—maybe simply her aura—that brought me a sense of peace I couldn’t find anywhere else. I stayed beside her through her parents’ divorce and the devastating loss of her mother, and despite everything happening around us, our relationship never faltered.
We married young, at 19 and 20. Life wasn’t always easy, and my wife’s outlook could sometimes become pessimistic, but we remained strong for each other. We’d planned to wait at least five years before having children, yet she became pregnant with our first child when she was 22. She was nervous about becoming a mother, but I reassured her that we’d face whatever came together. Eventually, she began feeling hopeful again, and our daughter was born without complications.
After the birth, however, something gradually changed in the way my wife viewed herself. She became intensely conscious of her appearance and struggled with the changes pregnancy had made to her body. As a stay-at-home mother, she increasingly avoided leaving the house and preferred that I handle errands whenever I wasn’t working. Dates disappeared because she believed she had nothing suitable to wear. I tried constantly to reassure her that she was my woman for life and that my love for her body wasn’t conditional.

I offered to put money aside so she could buy clothes she felt comfortable wearing, but she didn’t want to buy anything at her current size.
I offered to exercise with her every day.
She always found a reason she couldn’t.
Eventually, she began talking about what her father called a family curse. I didn’t believe in anything like that and encouraged her to see herself as the person responsible for shaping her own future.
Then came my wife’s traumatic accident.
Another car pulled out in front of her, forcing her to veer off the road and down an embankment. Her vehicle wrapped around a tree and began smoking.
By the time I reached the hospital, she was conscious enough to tell me something extraordinary.
Someone had saved her life.
According to my wife, a man climbed down the embankment seconds after the crash and pulled her up the steep wall to safety just before her car exploded.
I could barely believe what I was hearing.
After everything she’d endured and all her fears about the supposed family curse, I told her this proved the opposite. She had survived.
But my wife wanted to know who had saved her.
She asked me to contact anyone at the hospital or in the police department who might know the man’s identity. I tried, but nobody seemed to know who he was.
After she was discharged, our lives appeared to settle back into something close to normal.
In fact, she seemed different in a positive way.
Her self-esteem improved. Her doubts seemed to fade. She told me surviving the accident convinced her that the curse had finally been broken.
I was genuinely happy for her.
There were a few things I didn’t understand at the time.
I found a cigarette butt in our front yard. When I asked about it, she suggested it probably belonged to the lawn guy.
She was also spending noticeably more time on her phone, usually when I was working or somewhere else in the house.
I didn’t immediately become suspicious.
I thought surviving such a terrifying accident had simply made her appreciate her friends and relatives more.
Then one day, I came home.
There was a strange car sitting in our driveway.
I could smell burgers and hot dogs cooking somewhere behind the house.
When I walked into the backyard, I saw my wife standing beside another man as he cooked at our grill.
I asked what was going on.
My wife smiled.
And then she introduced me to the man who had saved her life.
