My Husband Grabbed Me by the Hair after I returned home exhausted from work, but the warning signs began before I even opened our apartment door. I heard a familiar creak from the hallway floorboard, the one I had been asking Derek to repair since February. My hand froze on the lock. It was 9:47 p.m., and I had spent the evening wondering whether I had enough energy to prepare dinner. I hadn’t eaten, and all I wanted was to sit down and rest. Instead, Derek opened the door before I finished turning the key. He stood in the entryway with his arms crossed, wearing the expression I had learned to recognize whenever his thoughts had turned into accusations.
He was still wearing his work clothes. The apartment was dark except for the kitchen light, and the air smelled stale from the closed windows. Derek immediately announced the time, as though my late arrival were evidence against me. He reminded me that he had called at 7:30. I explained that I had been in a meeting and had texted him back. He complained that my message contained only one word: meeting. I placed my bag on the entry table, already sensing where the conversation was going. Derek remembered small details from conversations months earlier and brought them up during arguments, turning ordinary remarks into reasons to question me.
He insisted that my office usually emptied by 6:15. I explained that the Halverson Group had pushed a client meeting to eight o’clock and that I had been working since seven that morning. I was exhausted and didn’t want another argument. When I told him I wasn’t doing this tonight, I started toward the hallway. Derek moved with me. Something about the atmosphere changed immediately. His voice grew colder as he repeated my words. I said I wanted a shower and some sleep, but he demanded that I look at him. His jaw tightened, and I recognized an expression I had seen only twice during our three years of marriage.

On those earlier occasions, I had somehow managed to redirect the conversation before it became worse. This time, nothing I said seemed to reach him.
I told Derek I would get some water and go to bed. We could talk in the morning.
Then he moved.
My Husband Grabbed Me by the Hair near the back of my head and pulled so suddenly that my neck twisted and I lost my balance.
My bag struck the floor. I reached for the wall, missed, and fell hard onto the entryway tiles. My right knee hit first, sending pain through my leg. My palm scraped against the wall, tearing the skin.
Everything happened in seconds, but I remembered individual details: the cold floor, the yellow kitchen light, and the ringing in my right ear.
Derek stood over me without speaking.
He didn’t apologize. He didn’t help me up. He simply watched.
When I said his name, my voice sounded thin and unfamiliar. He turned away, walked down the hallway, and shut the bedroom door.
I remained on the floor, shaking, as the pain in my knee grew stronger. There was blood on my palm, and my neck already hurt.
I knew it would probably feel worse by morning.
Eventually, I reached for my bag and found my phone. I needed someone to come over, someone who could help me understand what had just happened.
I called the only person I thought I could turn to.
My mother-in-law answered on the second ring.
