Valerie Ordered The Lobster, The Steak, And Two Glasses Of Wine At Ruth’s Chris. Split 6 Ways — $94 Each. At 9:47 P.M. She Grabbed Her Purse: ‘Emergency.’ I Just Smiled.

Valerie always ordered the most expensive food and wine, then made the rest of us split the bill evenly. This time, I stayed quiet because one phone call had already changed everything.

Valerie didn’t hesitate. At Ruth’s Chris, she ordered the lobster, the bone-in ribeye, two glasses of the good Cabernet, and started adding appetizers for the table before anyone else had finished looking at the menu. Then she announced that all six diners would split everything evenly because nobody wanted to do math on a Friday night. The others went quiet. The narrator said nothing—because this time, he already knew something Valerie didn’t.

This wasn’t the first time Valerie had pulled this trick. She had done essentially the same thing through five previous dinners: order from the expensive end of the menu, add wine and shared dishes nobody requested, then casually announce that splitting the check evenly would be easier.

Everyone knew what was happening. Dana’s jaw tightened. Greg nearly spoke before thinking better of it. Tasha and Eli exchanged a knowing look. Nobody wanted to become the person at an elegant restaurant calculating exactly how many dollars of someone else’s lobster they were being asked to subsidize.

That social discomfort was exactly why Valerie’s strategy kept working.

Months earlier, the narrator had ordered grilled chicken and a single iced tea while Valerie enjoyed a $90 entrée and a $40 glass of wine.

When the bill was divided evenly, everyone else quietly absorbed part of Valerie’s extravagance.

Nobody challenged her.

Not the first time.

Not the second.

Not the third.

Eventually, the narrator stopped objecting and started watching.

One dinner in April made the pattern impossible to ignore.

Valerie ordered a two-tier seafood tower that nobody else wanted, added an expensive bottle of French wine, and then conveniently disappeared before the bill arrived because she supposedly had a flat tire.

Everyone left behind had to cover her food.

That night, the narrator checked his banking app and understood something important.

Valerie wasn’t going to stop.

Why would she?

Her strategy worked every single time.

But tonight at Ruth’s Chris, something was different.

While Valerie entertained the table with stories, the narrator thought about a phone call he’d made two weeks earlier.

The monthly dinner reservation had needed a credit card to secure a Friday-night table for six.

And Valerie had made the reservation herself.

She always did.

She liked choosing the restaurant, choosing the time, and walking through the door with the authority of having everything booked under her name.

But the narrator had become curious about something Valerie had apparently never considered.

What exactly happened to the credit card used to hold a large-party reservation when the check arrived?

So two weeks earlier, he’d called the restaurant.

A woman named Renata had patiently explained how their reservation system worked.

The narrator listened carefully.

Then he asked one more question.

Her answer changed the way he looked at tonight’s dinner.

Now Valerie was happily ordering lobster, steak, wine, and appetizers while once again telling everyone:

“We’ll split it even.”

The narrator simply folded his menu, watched her order—and waited.
