At midnight, the police surrounded my house while I watched everything remotely from my cabin. Then a detective I had known since high school appeared at my door and told me something had happened to my wife.

At midnight, the police surrounded my house while I was miles away at my cabin with Buddy, my St. Hubert hound. A security notification appeared on my phone, and when I opened my laptop, I saw two uniformed officers standing at my front door and two more positioned at the back. Then I noticed someone I recognized: Detective Robert Miller, a man I’d known since high school.\

Robert wasn’t a stranger. I’d previously worked with the local police as a cybersecurity consultant, and we normally called each other by our first names. But that night, his manner was different. Through the security camera, I watched him look toward a large brown envelope taped to my front door. My soon-to-be ex-wife’s name was printed across it, and beside the envelope sat two suitcases and a duffel bag.

When I spoke through the security system and told Robert I was at my cabin, he asked when I could return home. Then he called me “Mr. Carter.” That alone told me something was seriously wrong. Robert wouldn’t explain everything remotely. He would only say that something had happened to my wife and that he needed to speak with me face-to-face.

I told him I’d be there within an hour.

Before leaving, I remotely unlocked the house so the officers could wait inside.

When I finally arrived, two uniformed officers were sitting in their patrol car while a black unmarked sedan occupied my driveway. I parked outside, let Buddy out briefly, and headed toward the house.

The first thing I noticed was that the brown envelope had disappeared from the front door.

I found Robert sitting at my kitchen table.

The envelope was directly in front of him.

I immediately asked why he’d removed it. Then I asked the question that mattered much more.

Where was my soon-to-be ex-wife?

Robert told me to sit down. Looking at the envelope, he said he didn’t think I would need those papers anymore.

I demanded that he stop avoiding the question.

Instead, Robert asked whether my wife had been attending an office party that evening.

She had.

The party was supposed to celebrate her promotion, but there was something Robert didn’t yet know about our marriage. For two months, I’d known that my wife had been betraying me with two senior executives at her company—the CEO and the CFO.

I hadn’t confronted her immediately.

Instead, I’d spent those two months collecting evidence. Once my lawyer believed there was enough, we’d filed divorce papers.

The house had belonged to me before our marriage, and our prenuptial agreement contained provisions that had become relevant because of what I’d discovered. The envelope Robert had taken from my front door contained the legal documents I’d intended my wife to find when she returned from the party.

There were also other legal actions connected to the situation.

Everything was inside that envelope.

I tapped it and looked directly at Robert.

I wanted him to stop circling around whatever had brought the police to my house.

His expression changed.

Something had happened at my wife’s office.

Robert told me it had occurred inside a conference room. My wife had been there with the CEO and CFO during a private encounter.

Then someone attacked them.

Both executives were dead.

My wife had also been killed.

For a moment, everything around me seemed to change. Whatever I’d expected when I saw that security notification, it wasn’t this.

Robert leaned toward me and explained that investigators believed the scene had characteristics suggesting the attack wasn’t random.

Then came the sentence that made the situation terrifyingly real.

He needed me to go with him.

I had to identify my wife’s body.

Only an hour earlier, I had watched the police surrounded my house through a laptop screen, believing the chaos waiting for me involved divorce papers and a marriage that was already ending.

Now three people were dead—and I was about to walk into a morgue with no idea who had done it or why.
