My stepdad abandoned me in hospital so he could go on vacation with my mom and his sons, and the worst part was that this came after years of feeling controlled and pushed aside in my own family. I hate my stepdad, Kevin. He is one of the most frustrating, controlling, and inconsiderate people I have ever known. Ever since he married my mom, my life has felt upside down. My parents divorced three years ago after years of frequent fighting, so their separation wasn’t a huge surprise to me.
My mom and dad had never been a great match. Even before the divorce, there was constant tension, especially around responsibilities at home. Although Mom technically stayed home, cooking, cleaning, and helping me with homework were never priorities for her. She preferred spending much of her time on her phone trying to build an online following as a beauty influencer, even though her audience wasn’t particularly large.
When she wasn’t focused on her phone, she spent a significant amount of Dad’s income shopping, going to brunch, getting beauty treatments, or spending time with friends. She cared intensely about her appearance and expected me to stay thin and look put together too. Sometimes it felt as though she saw me less as her daughter and more as a reflection of the image she wanted to present.

After the divorce, my parents initially shared custody of me, and I had to adjust to moving between two homes. Just when I was beginning to settle into that routine, Mom met Kevin. She seemed completely smitten from their first date. Within days they were officially dating, and only a few weeks later, I was expected to meet him and welcome this stranger into our lives.
I might have accepted Kevin easily if he’d treated me well. Instead, he immediately seemed to expect me to see him as my new dad. To me, he was a total downgrade from my actual father. He meddled constantly in my life and seemed to find opportunities to criticize or control me.
Kevin has two sons, and his rules for me feel completely different from the way he treats them. He gets visibly annoyed when he thinks I’m acting “too girly.” He has told me not to wear frocks or tight skirts, and he insists that I keep my long hair tied in a bun rather than wearing it down.
Even having friends over becomes uncomfortable. Kevin interrupts us and claims he’s only checking in, but instead of saying hello and leaving, he barges in and hovers around. If I protest, he says girls require constant supervision and tells us to pretend he isn’t there.
His sons don’t receive that same constant interference.
Whenever I tell Mom how intrusive Kevin’s behavior feels, she dismisses my concerns and says he’s simply being protective. His sons also bully me through teasing and mocking, but Mom brushes that aside too, claiming that’s how siblings bond.
After Mom and Kevin had dated for only a year, she decided to marry him. She made it clear that she loved him, wanted the marriage to work, and expected me to give Kevin a chance rather than make things difficult. I wanted to support her and keep the peace, so I agreed to try.
And I genuinely did try.
I tried accepting Kevin and his sons, adjusting to their routines, and living with rules that never felt fair. But the more I tried, the more it seemed that Kevin wanted control rather than a relationship—and long before my stepdad abandoned me in hospital, I was already beginning to understand how little my feelings seemed to matter in my new family.
