Parents Sided With My Cheating Ex And Refused To Let Me In Their House After Divorce. 5 Years Later They Found Out I’m Engaged And Suddenly They Want To…

When my parents sided with my cheating ex, losing my marriage suddenly became only part of the heartbreak I was being forced to face.

My parents sided with my cheating ex at the moment when I needed them most, but understanding how everything reached that point means going back five years, to when my marriage to Nick finally collapsed. Nick had cheated on me with the receptionist from his office, and I discovered the affair after going through his phone. I’d been suspicious for a long time, but when I finally checked his messages, there was no avoiding what they revealed. In that moment, I knew our marriage was over.

The discovery was especially painful because Nick and I had known each other for most of our lives. We’d been childhood sweethearts after meeting through our parents, who were family friends. Our relationship became on-and-off after high school, but when we were twenty-two, both families began pressuring us to get married. Eventually, we did. Marriage, however, didn’t turn into the life everyone seemed to imagine for us. Nick and I fought frequently, but despite our problems, cheating had never crossed my mind. Apparently, Nick hadn’t felt the same way.

Finding out about the affair hurt badly enough that I decided to leave our house that same day. My first instinct was simple: go home to my parents. I needed somewhere safe for a few days while I figured out what to do next. But before I arrived, Nick apparently realized where I would go. Desperate to stop me from leaving him, he contacted my parents and asked them not to let me into their house.

And incredibly, they listened to him.

I still remember standing outside their door, begging my own parents to let me stay with them for just a couple of days while I found somewhere else to live.

They refused.

Their reasoning stunned me. Whatever had happened between Nick and me, they said, he was still my husband. According to them, our marriage could still be fixed.

So I told them exactly what he’d done.

Nick had cheated on me.

But that revelation didn’t change their response. In fact, they already knew. Nick himself had admitted the affair when he’d called them, yet somehow they still believed I shouldn’t leave.

According to my parents, a marriage couldn’t be destroyed by only one person.

The implication was impossible to miss: somehow, Nick’s betrayal was partly my fault.

It wasn’t entirely surprising. Long before discovering the affair, I’d repeatedly told my parents about the problems in my marriage. I’d questioned whether remaining with Nick was really a good idea.

Their response had always been similar.

I was too ambitious.

I cared too much about my career.

I wasn’t giving enough time to my marriage.

Now, standing outside their home immediately after discovering my husband’s affair, I heard essentially the same argument again. Rather than offering me somewhere to sleep while I processed what had happened, they suggested I had never been as dedicated to my marriage as I was to my work.

That was enough.

I stopped trying to convince them and left.

Thankfully, I had good friends. Although I hadn’t been ready to tell anyone that my marriage was ending, I went to one friend and explained everything. She immediately gave me somewhere to stay.

Over the next few weeks, I contacted a lawyer, filed for divorce, and started searching for an apartment.

My friends became the people supporting me emotionally while my parents sided with my cheating ex and contacted me mainly to insist that leaving him was a terrible mistake.

Nick kept reaching out too.

He apologized repeatedly and insisted that marriage counseling could fix everything.

And my parents kept telling me to forgive him.

Eventually, I made a decision that would change my relationship with all of them—and five years later, that decision was about to collide with a completely different chapter of my life.
