My Sister’s Engagement Party. Her Fiancé’s Parents Asked What I Do. Before I Could Speak, Dad Smiled. She Delivers Meal Kits, You Know, The Boxes…

For years my family confidently explained my career for me, but one unexpected phone call was about to make their version much harder to maintain.

At my sister’s engagement party, her fiancé’s parents asked what I did for work, but before I could answer, Dad smiled and confidently told them, she delivers meal kits. He explained that I drove around in a van dropping off boxes of groceries. They nodded politely and turned away. Then the fiancé’s father’s phone rang. His expression suddenly changed. His face drained as he answered, “Mr. Secretary?” Then he looked at me. My name is Sonia Fairchild, and the misunderstanding about my career had become an almost absurd part of my life.

I’m 41 years old, and for the past 16 years I’ve worked for the Diplomatic Security Service, the law enforcement and security arm of the U.S. Department of State. I’m a regional security officer with a GS-15 classification. In practical terms, my responsibilities include protecting American diplomats, securing embassies, and managing threat assessments across multiple high-risk regions. I’ve coordinated protective details for three secretaries of state, carry a top-secret clearance, and have worked in situations most of my family knows absolutely nothing about.

Yet somehow, my family’s understanding became she delivers meal kits. I never actually told anyone that. Over roughly fifteen years, “diplomatic security” apparently became “government work.” Government work gradually became something involving delivery. Eventually, the story crystallized into a completely fictional version of my life in which I drove a van around delivering boxes of pre-portioned ingredients. The strangest part was that, eventually, I stopped correcting them.

It wasn’t because I’d given up.

Part of my real job involved reading people—understanding motivations and noticing what people revealed when they believed nobody was paying attention.

Eventually, my own family became an ongoing case study in willful blindness.

There was something darkly amusing about watching them construct an entire fictional version of my life while I stood directly in front of them.

But the misunderstanding hadn’t appeared from nowhere.

My sister Kay was two years younger than me, and for as long as I could remember, she’d been involved in a competition I’d never agreed to enter.

When we were children, she needed better grades. When I got into Georgetown, she applied to Princeton because she considered it more prestigious. When I joined the State Department, she became a corporate lawyer because lawyers made more money.

The problem was that I never played along.

I hadn’t chosen my career for prestige, salary, or some invisible family scoreboard. I chose it because I believed in the work.

That seemed to frustrate Kay even more.

If I wasn’t competing with her, how was she supposed to prove she’d won?

Eventually, she changed the rules.

Because I couldn’t discuss many details about my work, rarely bragged about myself, and usually gave vague answers about government security, Kay apparently concluded that I must be failing.

Maybe I was embarrassed.

Maybe I’d ended up in some dead-end position I was too proud to admit.

Once Kay accepted that version, she began presenting it to the rest of our family.

Small comments appeared at family dinners.

Sonia was always mysterious about work.

Sonia was still doing that “government thing.”

Our parents didn’t exactly mock me, but they didn’t challenge Kay’s assumptions either. My retired-accountant father understood success through things like salaries, job titles, and benefits. My guidance-counselor mother preferred practical careers and had never completely accepted that I hadn’t become a teacher.

Then, two Thanksgivings earlier, someone finally asked directly what I did.

Before I could answer, Kay jumped in.

According to my sister, I worked in delivery services.

Then someone asked what kind.

And that was the moment the fictional career my family had quietly built for me received its most specific description yet.
