My sister threw a shoe at my pregnant wife while she was seven months pregnant, and what hurt almost as much as the attack was watching my parents defend the person who had thrown it.

My sister threw a shoe at my wife Libby during a family dinner at my parents’ house, and I can still remember the horrible sound it made. The brown suede ankle boot struck her just below the shoulder, bounced off her arm, and landed on the carpet beside the recliner. Libby didn’t scream. She flinched, immediately bringing both hands to her pregnant stomach. She was thirty weeks along, and seeing her instinctively protect our unborn daughter frightened me more than any shouting could have. My sister Crystal stood in the dining room doorway with one foot bare, breathing hard, her face red with anger. Then she announced that Libby had been sitting in her chair, as though that explained everything.

Nobody moved. My mother stood holding a gravy boat, and my father remained seated at the head of the table with his napkin tucked into his collar. For one brief moment, I expected him to stand up and defend Libby. Instead, he laughed. It was a small, dismissive snort, the kind he usually made while watching football. He told Libby to relax and blamed pregnancy hormones, insisting Crystal hadn’t meant anything by it. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My wife had just been struck by a boot, and my father was acting as though she was the one overreacting.

Libby had been sitting in that recliner because her lower back had been hurting badly for days. It was the only chair in the house that offered proper lumbar support. She looked toward my father, then toward my mother, apparently hoping someone would acknowledge what had happened. My mother finally put down the gravy boat and wiped her hands on her apron. But instead of reprimanding Crystal, she gently suggested that Libby should sit on the floor next time. She reminded us that everyone knew how particular Crystal was about the chair. I watched my wife absorb those words without arguing, and something inside me changed.

It took two attempts because moving around at thirty weeks pregnant wasn’t easy.

She walked toward the hall closet, took down her coat, and put it on without saying anything.

I grabbed my keys from the hook beside the back door.

Then I reached into my pocket for my phone.

Nobody said goodbye as we left.

By the time we reached the front entrance, Crystal was already sitting comfortably in the recliner.

Her boot was back on her foot, and the footrest was raised.

It was as though nothing unusual had happened.

Outside, I helped Libby into our car and started the engine.

The heater blasted warm air into the freezing evening.

My wife stared silently through the windshield.

I could hardly process what my sister had done or how casually my parents had dismissed it.

My sister threw a shoe at the woman carrying my child, yet the rest of my family seemed more concerned about an old chair.

At 7:40 that Sunday evening, I called our real estate agent, Shonda.

She recognized my voice immediately.

When I told her I needed to list a house, she sounded surprised.

She thought Libby and I intended to remain in our own home until the baby arrived.

I explained that I wasn’t talking about our house.

I meant the property on Harlan Road.

I wanted it listed the following morning.

Through my parents’ front window, I could see my mother watching our car.

She had no idea what I’d just arranged.

Neither did Crystal.

And although my father knew something the others didn’t, he had never believed I would actually act on it.

What none of them understood was why I had the authority to sell the house they had always treated as their own.
