My Sister Raised Her Glass And Said, β€œTo The Brother Nobody Would Miss.” My Entire Family Laughed And Drank.

My sister raised her glass and toasted me as the brother nobody would miss, and fourteen relatives laughed before drinking along with her. I smiled, finished my wine, and left them with an envelope that suddenly didn’t seem quite so funny the next morning.

My sister raised her wine glass and called me the brother nobody would miss. Fourteen relatives were sitting around my parents’ Thanksgiving table, and for half a second, nobody reacted. Then my father burst out laughing. My mother followed. My younger brother Derek slapped the table, Uncle Ray shouted β€œCheers,” and every one of them drank. I watched them celebrate the joke at my expense, smiled, and quietly finished my wine.

My name is Glenn. I’m thirty-eight years old, a corporate attorney, and apparently disposable to my own family. Vanessa was still grinning when I placed my empty glass beside my plate and told her the joke was funny. Then I added that starting tomorrow, everyone at that table would discover exactly how much they’d miss me. The laughter immediately weakened.

Dad accused me of being dramatic. Instead of arguing, I reached inside my jacket, pulled out a thick envelope, and placed it beside the cranberry sauce. Derek leaned forward to inspect it. Vanessa jokingly asked whether I’d sued them. β€œNot yet,” I replied. That earned another laughβ€”even from me.

Then I stood up.

Mom couldn’t understand why I was leaving before dessert, especially after she’d made pumpkin pie. I told her I was sure someone would inherit my slice. Derek already had his fork suspiciously close to it.

As I put on my coat, Dad finally asked the question I’d been waiting for.

What was inside the envelope?

I opened the front door and gave him only two words: tomorrow’s problem.

Then I left.

At 8:02 the following morning, my phone started ringing.

By 8:05, I had seven missed calls. Minutes later, practically every adult who had toasted the brother nobody would miss was desperately trying to reach me.

Dad.

Vanessa.

Mom.

Derek.

Aunt Carol.

Uncle Ray.

Then Vanessa again.

My phone vibrated across the kitchen counter while I calmly made coffee.

Finally, Aunt Carol left a voicemail. Something was wrong with her rental house, she explained, and a woman from the insurance company was telling her she would have to handle the problem herself.

I stared at my coffee.

Then I started laughing.

Because the truth was beginning to reveal itself.

My family didn’t miss meβ€”not yet.

What they missed were all the things I’d been doing for them for free.

And there were a lot of them.

Growing up, my parents had always called me β€œthe dependable one.” It sounded complimentary, but in practice it meant problems were handed to me. Vanessa was the creative child. Derek was the sensitive one. Glenn was the person who fixed things.

If Vanessa forgot her homework, I drove it to school.

If Derek broke something, I repaired it.

If Mom couldn’t understand a bill, I figured it out.

If Dad became angry with a company, I handled customer service because, according to him, I β€œused words better.”

When I was seventeen, our electricity nearly got disconnected because Dad had forgotten a payment. He handed me the notice and simply told me to handle it.

I reminded him that I was seventeen.

His answer?

I understood computers.

Apparently, that qualification made me the family Secretary of the Treasury.

I paid the bill online, and the role stuck.

Glenn handles things.

Then I became a lawyer.

That was when my family discovered they’d accidentally raised their own free legal department.

At twenty-nine, Dad had a serious problem with a commercial client who refused to pay his landscaping company nearly forty thousand dollars.

There was another complication.

Dad hadn’t bothered getting a proper contract.

He had a handshake.

So I reconstructed invoices, emails, work orders, and payment records before negotiating a settlement that recovered most of his money.

Afterward, Dad took the family to dinner and proudly told everyone that he never let anybody push him around.

I was sitting six feet away.

Vanessa leaned toward me.

And what she said next made the whole thing even more revealing.
