A mother came home expecting her usual greeting, unaware that her daughter unconscious on bathroom floor was hidden somewhere inside the terrifyingly silent house.

I didn’t know my daughter unconscious on bathroom floor was somewhere inside my own home when I walked through the front door that evening. I expected Julie to be waiting for me like she always was. Normally, the moment she heard my keys, she would run toward the door shouting, “mommy,” before I could even put my bag down. But that evening there were no footsteps, no little voice, and no laughter. Nothing but silence. Somewhere behind a locked bathroom door, my little girl was lying unconscious, but at that moment, I had no idea anything was wrong.

I called Julie’s name and waited. Nothing. I called again, louder, asking where she was. At first, I wasn’t frightened. I thought she might be hiding or perhaps had gone outside. I put my belongings down and checked the living room. Empty. Then the kitchen. Empty. I walked into Julie’s bedroom. Her bed and toys were there, and her little pink blanket remained exactly where she’d left it that morning. But Julie wasn’t there. I searched the closets, looked beneath the beds, checked the backyard and even went around the front of the house.

Then I noticed something that immediately changed everything. Julie’s shoes were still inside. Her little jacket was hanging beside the front door. She couldn’t have simply gone outside alone. I grabbed my phone and called my mother, asking whether Julie was with her. After a short pause, Mom told me she hadn’t seen her and thought Julie was with me. My hand suddenly went weak. The phone slipped from my fingers and hit the floor. My daughter was missing.

I started crying and ran through the house again, calling Julie’s name until my voice began to break.

Every door.

Every room.

Every place where a child could possibly hide.

Nothing.

I finally realized I couldn’t waste another second and called 911.

I told the dispatcher my daughter was missing and that I couldn’t find her anywhere.

The questions came quickly. Her name was Julie. She was young. She had been inside the house. I had only just returned home and discovered she was gone.

I explained who had access to the house and gave them everything else I could remember.

Then came the waiting.

Those few minutes felt endless.

I continued walking from room to room, calling Julie’s name, still desperately hoping she would suddenly answer and turn the nightmare into some terrible misunderstanding.

Then I heard sirens.

Two police officers entered, followed shortly afterward by another officer. I begged them to find my daughter.

They began searching the entire house.

Bedrooms.

Closets.

Kitchen.

Garage.

Storage areas.

Backyard.

I followed them, praying that at any second someone would shout that they’d found Julie.

But room after room was empty.

One officer asked whether Julie had ever hidden from me before. I said no.

Another asked who else had been inside the house earlier that day.

I explained that my mother and sister had been around and that family sometimes came over.

Then one of the officers walked toward the hallway at the back of the house.

He stopped beside the bathroom.

He reached for the handle and tried opening the door.

It wouldn’t move.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Then he turned toward me and asked a question that made the fear inside me suddenly feel very different.

Was this bathroom normally locked?

“No,” I answered immediately.

Never.

That bathroom door was never locked from the outside.
