Renata’s phone rang at 7:20 on a Tuesday morning. Her stepdaughter Delaney was on the other end, and she didn’t bother with a greeting. Instead, she immediately announced that her father had died during the night and warned Renata to listen carefully because she was only going to explain what happened once.

Renata was already awake, standing in the kitchen with a cup of coffee while breakfast was being eaten behind her. Delaney claimed the death had happened quickly and that there had been nothing anyone could do. But there was something strange about her voice. She sounded less like a grieving daughter and more like someone delivering words she had rehearsed beforehand.

Then Delaney moved immediately to the inheritance.

She told Renata that everything had already been handled. According to her, her father’s wishes were clear: the house, financial accounts, company, and everything else would belong to Delaney. Renata, she insisted, wasn’t listed on the deed, trust, or business and had no claim to anything.

Before Renata could fully process what she was hearing, a man laughed somewhere near Delaney’s phone.

It was Kellen, Delaney’s husband.

His quiet, satisfied laugh made the call feel even less like someone delivering tragic family news and more like two people celebrating a plan that had finally worked.

Delaney then gave Renata one week to collect her personal belongings and leave the house.

But even that wasn’t the biggest surprise.

Kellen had already visited the property during the night and changed the locks.

When Renata asked whether they had really changed them, Delaney carefully corrected her. They had “secured the property,” she said, insisting that even a judge would agree with what they had done.

That was when Renata realized this hadn’t begun that morning.

For nearly three years, Delaney and Kellen had been pushing boundaries and waiting for an opportunity. This wasn’t grief causing them to act irrationally. They seemed prepared.

So Renata started asking questions.

What exact time had Roland died?

Which hospital had called?

Delaney became increasingly irritated, but eventually claimed the hospital had called after midnight and told her that Roland had coded and couldn’t be revived.

Kellen then joined the conversation directly.

He bragged that they had already contacted the attorney that morning to begin opening the estate. According to him, Delaney was the executor and beneficiary while Renata was nothing more than someone whose name didn’t appear in the will.

“It’s over,” he told her. “You lost.”

Renata didn’t argue.

Instead, she looked around the kitchen.

Her eyes moved from the calendar on the refrigerator to the dish holding the car keys and finally toward the breakfast table.

Sitting there in his reading glasses and old gray sweater was sixty-eight-year-old Roland Merrick.

The same man Delaney had just declared dead.

He was calmly eating scrambled eggs.

Roland had been listening to the entire conversation.

Renata turned on the phone’s speaker.

Roland quietly put down his fork, leaned toward the phone—and prepared to let his daughter know exactly who had been listening.
