For more than twenty years, my parents excluded me from family vacations while taking everyone else, and the words they used to explain why made me wonder whether I had ever truly belonged.

My parents excluded me from family vacations for more than twenty years, and every new set of holiday photos reminded me that I was the only child they never seemed to want along. I’m thirty-four now, and I had just seen another collection of pictures from their latest trip on Facebook. My three siblings were there with their partners and children, smiling beside my parents. Everyone looked happy, surrounded by the kind of family memories I had spent most of my childhood watching from a distance. Beneath the photos was a caption celebrating how important family was. Years ago, seeing something like that would have hurt terribly. This time, I felt something quieter, almost numb. The sharp pain had worn away after so many years of being left behind. But the pictures brought back the first time my parents had explained why I wasn’t welcome on their trips. I was thirteen years old, and it was Christmas.

I remember coming downstairs with my backpack already packed. I had carefully chosen my swimsuit, sandals, and a disposable camera bought with my allowance. My parents were preparing for a Christmas vacation to Acapulco, and my siblings were running around excitedly, talking about the beach and the ocean. Huge suitcases filled the living room. I thought I was going with them. Then my mother saw my backpack and stopped folding clothes. She asked what I was doing, and I told her I was getting ready. My father came out of the kitchen carrying a cooler. He looked at me, then at my mother, and she sighed. She told me I wasn’t going. When I asked why, my father said there wasn’t enough room in the car and someone needed to stay with Grandpa. I tried to remind them that it was Christmas, but my mother was already closing her suitcase. Then she told me I never fit in on trips and would be more comfortable staying behind.

Twenty minutes later, I watched my family drive away from my bedroom window. My siblings were laughing as they climbed into the car. The suitcases were packed into the trunk, and even our dog was going with them. My mother didn’t look back. I stood there with the backpack I had packed so carefully, trying to understand why everyone else had a place on that trip except me. I had believed Christmas meant being together, but my parents had decided that together didn’t include me. That first vacation became the beginning of a pattern. The excuses changed, but the outcome never did. Whenever my parents made travel plans, my siblings were included and I was expected to remain behind. Nobody asked whether I wanted to go. Nobody seemed interested in how it felt to be excluded.

As I grew older, the vacations became more elaborate, but my place in the family stayed exactly the same.

In the summer of 2010, my parents and siblings toured Spain, France, and Italy for two weeks.

I stayed with Grandpa, watching documentaries about the very places they were visiting.

At Christmas in 2011, they went on a Caribbean cruise while I ate reheated turkey at Grandpa’s house, surrounded by the familiar smell of coffee and old wood.

For New Year’s in 2015, they stayed in mountain cabins while I watched the countdown on television beside Grandpa’s recliner.

Every time, there was another explanation.

Sometimes there wasn’t enough money.

Sometimes I supposedly preferred staying home.

Other times I was simply too difficult to travel with.

My parents excluded me from family vacations so consistently that I eventually stopped expecting an invitation.

But there was something about those weekends at Grandpa’s house that my parents never seemed to understand.

And what began as the loneliest part of my childhood was about to become something I could never have imagined.
