My Mother-In-Law Moved Into Our Guest Room “For Two Weeks,” Stayed Fourteen Months, Then Told Me To Sleep On The Couch Because She Wanted…

My mother-in-law moved into our guest room for two weeks, but fourteen months later she was telling me to sleep on the couch so she could take my bedroom. When my husband laughed and told me to โ€œjust deal with it,โ€ I realized they had both forgotten one very important thing about whose house they were living in.

My mother-in-law moved into our guest room for two weeksโ€”or at least that was the arrangement when Lurleen first arrived. Fourteen months later, she stood in the doorway of my bedroom with her arms crossed and calmly announced that the guest room no longer worked for her. Now she wanted my bedroom, my good mattress, and the bathroom attached to it.

My husband, Errol, was sitting on the edge of our bed getting dressed. He was already smiling as his mother explained that her back couldn’t handle the smaller room anymore. I stood beside the dresser holding my hairbrush, looking through the window at Lurleen’s car parked crooked behind mine in my own drivewayโ€”the same way it had been parked for more than a year.

Nobody standing in that hallway expected me to say no. That confidence hadn’t appeared overnight. My mother-in-law moved into our guest room back in June of the previous year, arriving on an unbearably hot Saturday and promising that she needed only two weeks to get back on her feet. I agreed to help her and told her we would get everything arranged.

Then I saw how much she had brought.

There were two large suitcases, three duffel bags, a garment bag, four taped plastic storage bins, another bin containing a sewing machineโ€”and even a hard case for a foot spa.

Nobody packs a foot spa for two weeks.

Errol carried everything into the guest room without asking me where it should go or questioning how temporary this arrangement really was. He made trip after trip through the hallway, maneuvering around me as though I were another piece of furniture.

Meanwhile, Lurleen stood in my kitchen drinking my ice water and studying the ceiling fan.

She promised to contribute $400 every month toward groceries because she didn’t want to become a burden. I initially told her she didn’t have to, but Lurleen insisted.

That seemed to settle everything.

Except there was something neither Lurleen nor Errol thought about that dayโ€”or during the fourteen months that followed.

Just off my kitchen was a small back room containing a sewing table and an old gray filing cabinet. Inside its second drawer sat a black three-ring binder from the law office that had handled the closing on the house.

Inside that binder was the deed.

And there was only one name written on it.

Mine.

Nadine Vasco.

I had bought the house in March 2016 for $164,000. My father had died eight months earlier, and I used $31,000 from his life insurance toward the down payment because he had always wanted me to own something of my own.

I didn’t even meet Errol until two years later.

We married in October 2019 in the backyard of that same house beneath a rented tent. I kept my last name because it carried my father’s name, and during nearly seven years of marriage, Errol never once bothered opening that filing cabinet to see exactly who owned the property.

Then Lurleen’s promised two weeks quietly expired.

Nobody mentioned it.

By the end of her first month, she had taken over all three shelves in the hall bathroom and the top of the toilet tank. Soon she claimed space in the medicine cabinet and began using a label maker to mark areas as her own.

Then she moved into the kitchen.

She rearranged my cutting boards, reorganized the spice rack, and claimed a refrigerator shelf. After that came the television schedule. By August, I was watching my own programs on a tablet in my bedroom with headphones because Lurleen controlled the television every evening.

The house was changing one shelf, one room, and one routine at a time.

And I kept watching.

Because while Lurleen and Errol apparently believed my silence meant I would continue surrendering whatever they wanted, there was still a black binder sitting quietly in that filing cabinet.

And the deed inside it hadn’t changed.
