Instead, after finishing the last leg of a two-day work trip and switching her phone off airplane mode, Brittany discovered eleven missed calls waiting for her. Seven came from an unknown number, three from her ex-husband Mark, and one from her mother. She immediately sensed something was terribly wrong. When she returned the unknown call, a man answered—and Brittany could hear her ten-year-old son Noah crying in the background. The man assured her that her children were safe, but his explanation was horrifying: he and his wife had found the kids left at a gas station, sitting outside alone with no grandmother, adult, or car in sight.

Brittany and Mark had been divorced for three years. Their relationship was hardly perfect, but they generally managed to co-parent successfully. Mark sounded frantic when he answered. Noah had contacted him too, but Mark was almost two hours away because of work. Brittany told him she was already going to get the children.
Then her mother finally called back.
Her opening words stunned Brittany: before Brittany “got dramatic,” she needed to understand that the children were fine. Brittany asked where she was. Her mother calmly replied that she was driving home.
Brittany immediately asked the obvious question: if she was driving home, why weren’t Brittany’s children still in her car?
Her mother sighed as though Brittany were overreacting to something trivial. She claimed Noah and Lily had been screaming and fighting and refused to stop. She had warned them more than once that she would pull over if they couldn’t behave.
Brittany asked directly whether that meant she had actually left them behind.
Her mother insisted they weren’t babies and argued that the gas station had plenty of people around. To her, apparently, that made leaving two young children there acceptable. Brittany reminded her that Lily was only seven.

Her mother claimed she only wanted them to sit there and think for ten minutes.
