My Daughter-In-Law Sent Me A Voice Message From My Son’s Spare Bedroom, Dad, It’s Rebecca. James Locked Me In Here, It’s Been 4 Days Now, Maybe 5…

When my daughter-in-law sent me a voice message in the middle of the night saying my own son had locked her inside a bedroom, I had to decide immediately which one of them I believed.

When my daughter-in-law sent me a voice message, I was alone at my cabin in Muskoka, three hours north of Toronto. It was 3:47 in the morning, and I’d been working late on quarterly reports for my consulting firm when the notification broke the silence. The message was from Rebecca, my son’s wife of six years. Her voice was weak and trembling. She said James had locked her in the spare bedroom. She wasn’t even sure how long she’d been there—four days, maybe five. According to Rebecca, James slid a bottle of water beneath the door once a day, but there was no food. The window had been nailed shut. She’d tried screaming, but their home was too far from the neighbors for anyone to hear. Then she told me she didn’t know how much longer she could survive before the message suddenly ended.

My blood ran cold. James was my son—my only child—and Rebecca had been part of our family for six years. I immediately called her back, but the call went straight to voicemail. Then I called James. No answer. I tried again and again until he finally picked up on my fourth attempt. His voice sounded strangely calm for someone receiving a frantic call from his father at nearly four in the morning. When I demanded to know where Rebecca was, he told me she was sleeping. I told him not to lie to me. I’d just received a message saying he’d locked his wife inside a room for days.

There was a pause before James answered, and something about it immediately bothered me. He claimed Rebecca had recently been experiencing paranoid delusions and possibly a stress-induced psychotic break. According to him, she’d been inventing accusations and he’d only been trying to protect her until she could be professionally evaluated. He said he hadn’t told me because he didn’t want me worrying unnecessarily. But I’d spent thirty-five years working as a corporate fraud investigator before retirement. I knew what it sounded like when somebody was constructing an explanation in real time.

I told James to let me speak to Rebecca immediately.

He couldn’t.

He claimed she’d been sedated because a doctor had prescribed medication to help her sleep.

I demanded the doctor’s name.

Another pause followed.

Then James gave me a name at the Scarborough Health Network and insisted everything he was doing was for Rebecca’s benefit.

But none of it felt right.

Rebecca was one of the most level-headed people I’d ever known. She was a chartered accountant—methodical, rational, and careful.

The idea that she’d suddenly developed paranoid delusions severe enough to justify being isolated didn’t fit the woman I’d known for six years.

I told James I was coming home.

He immediately tried to stop me.

He said there was no reason to drive all that way in the middle of the night.

I hung up.

Within minutes, I was throwing clothes into an overnight bag.

The drive from Muskoka to their house in Markham normally took about three hours, but every minute suddenly felt unbearable.

Every red light seemed endless.

Every slow vehicle on the highway frustrated me.

And throughout the drive, I kept replaying Rebecca’s message.

The weakness in her voice.

The trembling.

Four or five days without food.

I couldn’t convince myself that what I’d heard was simply a paranoid delusion.

It sounded like someone desperately asking for help.

Their home was in a quiet Markham cul-de-sac surrounded by manicured lawns, expensive cars, and tall privacy fences.

I’d helped James with the down payment three years earlier after his promotion.

Rebecca had been thrilled about finally having a home office for her accounting work.

Back then, James had seemed attentive and supportive—the kind of husband a father-in-law would be relieved to see his daughter-in-law marry.

But as I drove toward that house before sunrise, one question kept getting harder to ignore.

If my daughter-in-law sent me a voice message because she genuinely believed she was trapped inside my son’s house, what exactly was I going to find when I arrived?
