My parents had been married for twenty-five years before divorcing three years ago. My dad was always the steady, hardworking one. He had a good-paying engineering job and consistently showed up for me and my siblings. My mom was different. She loved being social, loved attention, and cared deeply about appearances. She hosted parties, followed trends, and wanted everyone around us to believe we were the perfect family.
We weren’t. While I was in college, my mom began spending more time out with friends while my dad stayed at work later. Their relationship seemed to deteriorate slowly until we learned the truth: my mom had been having an affair with her colleague, Rick. Her behavior changed dramatically. She posted quotes about being an independent queen while complaining about how difficult her life had become. She also guilt-tripped my siblings and me for supposedly not supporting her enough. Meanwhile, Rick became a regular presence. My siblings and I kept our distance. Then came my wedding.
