I went to my second home expecting to meet Chloe, the property manager, sign the rental paperwork, and prepare my lake house for a long-term tenant, but instead I discovered my daughter-in-law’s parents in my house with three relatives. I expected the place to be empty. Instead, my key stopped halfway into the door because someone had chained it from inside. When I knocked, Larry, my daughter-in-law Sarah’s father, opened the door as far as the chain allowed while holding one of my crystal wine glasses. Music thumped behind him. Someone laughed. A chair scraped across my hardwood floor. Then Larry casually told me Sarah had said I wouldn’t be there that day.
That immediately bothered me because I hadn’t told Sarah about my visit. I’d only told my son Jason. The lake house had been his late father’s favorite place, and I’d thought Jason might want one final walk through it before I rented it. Larry eventually removed the chain and let me inside. Paper plates covered my grandmother’s lace runner, grocery bags were piled on my cherry table, and my late husband Frank’s framed fishing license had been moved from the mantle so someone could put a speaker there.
Then I saw Brenda, Sarah’s mother, sitting at the head of my table wearing my cream cardigan and drinking from another of my wine glasses. Three relatives stared at me as though I’d walked uninvited into their space. When I demanded to know what they were doing, Brenda laughed and told me not to be dramatic. According to her, Sarah had allowed them to use the house for a little family reset after a stressful month.

One of the relatives quietly pointed out that I was Jason’s mother.
Brenda’s response was even more unsettling. She described the lake house as future shared property—family property, really.
I didn’t argue. Instead, I walked into the kitchen and immediately noticed something missing. The black rental folder I’d left on the counter was gone. It contained Chloe’s agreement, the cleaning schedule, and a repair list I’d spent months budgeting for.
When I asked where it was, Brenda followed me into the kitchen, still wearing my cardigan. She said Sarah had taken care of that “mess” because renting the property to strangers wasn’t a good idea. According to her, keeping the house in the family made more sense.
Then she suggested that at my age, I should concentrate on enjoying my grandchildren instead of “playing landlord.”
I called Jason.
Voicemail.
I called again.
Voicemail.
Brenda watched me with a pitying smile and warned me not to make my son choose sides over a house that would supposedly belong to him someday.
Then Chloe arrived.
She stopped in the doorway and took in the strangers, food, music, and expression on my face. Brenda immediately tried to dismiss her, but I told Chloe to wait outside because we were still doing business that day.
Before answering Brenda again, I walked down the hallway.
Two open suitcases were sitting in the guest room.
There were marker lines across the loft trunk.
My bedroom nightstand drawer was open.
And the cedar box where I’d kept my late husband’s spare watch was gone.
Finding my daughter-in-law’s parents in my house had suddenly become about far more than an unauthorized family gathering.
I returned to the others and told them they needed to leave that day.
Brenda lowered her glass.
Then she gave me a single answer.
No.
