I Came Home From The Hospital To Find My Stuff In Trash Bags On The Lawn. My Family Met Me At The Door You’re Costing Us Too Much, Get Out! I Drove Away. Six Months Later, Mom…

By StoryStream Editorial

I was temporarily living with my parents while my house was being renovated, paying their utilities, groceries, and even their expensive internet bill. Then one ordinary drive to work ended with me waking up in a hospital three days later after two surgeries. When I asked whether my family had visited, the doctor’s answer told me everything.

My name is Autumn, I’m 32, and for the past six years I’ve worked in construction doing site inspections and making sure projects are up to code. While my own house underwent major renovations, I temporarily moved back in with my parents. They agreed—but only if I paid the utilities, bought the groceries, and basically covered everything while I stayed there.

I accepted the arrangement. I even paid an extra $150 a month for a better internet package because I needed it for work. Meanwhile, my older sister Lisa and her husband Tom had a five-year-old son named Jake, and somehow moving back home also turned me into their permanent free babysitter whenever they wanted to go out.

My parents weren’t struggling financially. Both were retired and reasonably comfortable. Still, I was suddenly paying for almost everything in their house. Some days, it felt less like I’d temporarily moved home and more like I’d become a tenant who was expected to finance the household and make everyone else’s life easier.

Then came an ordinary Tuesday morning.

I grabbed coffee, checked my emails, and drove downtown to inspect a new office building. I was actually ahead of schedule for once, and while driving, I found myself thinking about my renovated house.

My contractor had sent photographs of the new kitchen counters the previous day. They looked incredible. I was already imagining moving my belongings back, having my own space again, and maybe inviting a few friends over for a housewarming party.

An old song from the ’90s played on the radio.

I hummed along and tapped my fingers against the steering wheel.

The intersection ahead was green.

I pressed the accelerator slightly, hoping to get through before the light changed.

And then everything went black.

I don’t remember the collision. I don’t remember metal crushing or glass breaking. I don’t remember seeing the other driver.

One moment, I was driving to work.

The next thing I knew, I opened my eyes surrounded by white walls, the smell of disinfectant, and the steady beeping of hospital equipment.

My body felt wrong. My left side was simultaneously numb and painful, and tubes and wires surrounded me. Then a doctor walked into the room and told me something I couldn’t understand at first.

I’d been unconscious for three days.

The accident had caused serious injuries. Doctors had already performed two surgeries—one involving my spleen and another to stop internal bleeding. My left arm had suffered a compound fracture, three ribs were cracked, and another operation was still ahead.

The doctor told me I was lucky to be alive.

Then I asked the question that seemed obvious.

“Have you called my family? Has anyone visited?”

They had contacted my mother.

But according to the doctor, she seemed more concerned that my accident had disrupted the family’s weekend plans.

My workplace had called repeatedly to check on me.

My colleagues were worried.

But after three days in the hospital…

Not one member of my family had come to see me.
