I bought a house in secret, and the moment I discovered my son giving a tour of my house to his wife, her mother, and a stranger, I knew something was deeply wrong. A grocery bag slipped from my hand before I fully understood what I was seeing. Eggs cracked across the tile and apples rolled toward the hallway while I stood frozen in the doorway of my own home. Jude was in the living room holding a measuring tape. His wife, Kelsey, gestured toward the back wall like she was discussing renovations. Her mother sat on the arm of my reading chair drinking from a travel mug, while a woman I didn’t recognize held a clipboard and pointed toward the ceiling.
I knew immediately what kind of woman the stranger was: real estate. Jude barely seemed surprised to see me. Instead, he told me I wasn’t supposed to be home yet. I reminded him that this was my house. Kelsey smiled and said the place was perfect for what they’d been thinking. Then Jude explained that the layout worked for the children, the office could be converted, they’d save on rent, they’d be closer to daycare, and I wasn’t using all the space anyway.
My key was still hanging from the lock behind me as I stepped past the broken groceries and the people I’d never invited inside. Nobody offered to clean up. Nobody seemed embarrassed. I smiled, opened the front door, and silently made it clear that their tour was over. One by one they left. Kelsey’s mother gave me a pitying look, the realtor muttered about the property’s market potential, and Jude kissed my cheek as though nothing unusual had happened. Once the door shut behind them, I called a locksmith.

What made the intrusion worse was what had happened only three days earlier.
Jude had arrived with two coffees and a familiar smile, saying he’d come to see my new place. We’d sat together on the small porch watching the tide under a sky caught between rain and sunshine. He asked about flooring, paint colors, and furniture for the guest room. For a little while, I felt proud—not only of the cottage, but of how comfortable things seemed between us.
Then Kelsey arrived, supposedly just to say hello, with her mother unexpectedly beside her.
They stayed only fifteen or twenty minutes. The visit seemed harmless. Jude searched my pantry for snacks while everyone made polite comments about the house. At one point, I stepped into the back bedroom to take a phone call, leaving my purse near the door with its zipper open.
After the unexpected tour, that small detail suddenly mattered.
Walking through my living room, I could still smell someone else’s perfume. A floral silk scarf rested on the arm of my chair. It seemed to belong to Kelsey’s mother, but I couldn’t stop wondering why it had been left there.
I checked the drawer containing my spare key. That key was still there. The windows were locked and nothing had been broken.
Yet they’d gotten inside.
Then I checked my purse.
One of the two spare keys I’d made was missing.
Not misplaced.
Gone.
Someone had taken a key without asking me.
I pressed my fingers against the counter and looked around again. In the hallway, faint tape residue stretched across the hardwood at the office threshold—evidence of measurements and planning.
This wasn’t simply an awkward family visit anymore. My son giving a tour of my house meant he’d been inside with people I hadn’t invited, discussing how they could use rooms that belonged to me.
And now I knew exactly how they’d gotten through the door.
