When I begged my ex-husband to take me back, he told me he couldn’t because I had broken him, and even now those words are difficult to face. I’m 42, and three years ago I cheated on my husband, who is also 42. It destroyed my family, and I regret it every day. We’d been together since we were 19. Neither of us was the other’s first relationship, but for 22 years, I genuinely believed we were happy. He could lose his temper when frustrations built up, and I could say heartless things when I was angry too, but he never held those moments against me. We had a marriage that, looking back now, contained far more love and devotion than I appreciated at the time.
I was a stay-at-home mother raising five children—three girls and two boys—and naturally, I was often exhausted. My husband worked 60 hours a week, but he still helped around the house. On weekends, he made sure I could sleep in, and I’d often wake to a clean house and breakfast waiting. As our three oldest children began leaving for college, however, something inside me started changing. The house felt different. I still had my two boys, but they were already in junior high and didn’t need me in the same way anymore.
I became bored and restless. My husband noticed and encouraged me to find a job. Looking back, I wish I’d chosen a hobby instead. I wish I’d made many different decisions. Eventually, after being outside the workforce for 21 years, I started working as a customer service representative. I felt good about myself. I was around 160 pounds at the time, confident, excited to be working again, and suddenly surrounded by younger coworkers.

My husband actually encouraged me to spend time with the younger women at work because I’d lacked female companionship for years.
At first, it seemed harmless.
I’d encouraged him to spend time with his coworkers before, so it felt fair that I should do the same. But gradually, those friendships began affecting the way I viewed my marriage.
The women started putting ideas into my head.
They suggested I could do better. They made me question whether my husband was attractive enough and encouraged the idea that I’d somehow been held back.
One male coworker even described my husband in a way that made him sound weak, and instead of defending the man I’d spent decades loving, I absorbed it.
That change didn’t happen all at once.
I’d loved my husband. I’d honored him, and he’d honored me. Friends had repeatedly told me how lucky I was to have him, and at one point, I’d believed them.
But the comments at work kept coming.
Little by little, I began questioning the life I’d once valued.
Eventually, I started flirting with the same male coworker who’d insulted my husband. He was my age, handsome, and physically fit.
Over the following weeks, flirting became something more.
I felt younger. I felt desired.
And instead of recognizing how dangerous that feeling had become, I started treating my husband differently.
I denied him affection. I mocked his weight. When he began questioning what was happening between us, I even tried making him believe his suspicions were unreasonable.
Looking back, I barely recognize the woman I became.
Then one evening at dinner, everything changed.
My husband stared at me and suddenly noticed something I hadn’t successfully hidden.
There was a mark on my neck.
As our sons watched from nearby, he looked directly at me—and the secret I’d been carrying was suddenly no longer mine to control.
Years later, I begged my ex-husband to take me back, but the chain of events that made him my ex began with what happened at that dinner table.
