Get Everything Ready! My Daughter-In-Law Texted Before Coming To My Lake House For A BBQ. As Always, She Arrived Empty-Handed, Expecting Me To Do Everything.

My daughter-in-law expected me to prepare everything for another weekend at my lake house, just as I’d done for years. But when her demanding text arrived that Friday morning, something inside me finally changed.

My daughter-in-law expected me to prepare everything before she and my son arrived at my lake house for another barbecue. Her Friday morning text wasn’t a request or even a polite question—it was a command: get everything ready because they would be there at noon. There was no hello, no asking how I was, and certainly no question about whether I wanted company that weekend.

My name is Alice Bennett. I’m sixty-eight, I’ve been widowed for seven years, and I’m the sole owner of a beautiful, peaceful lake house in northern Michigan. My husband and I worked our entire lives to pay for this little piece of heaven. But after he passed away, my son David and his wife Sarah gradually began treating my home less like my sanctuary and more like their own fully staffed summer resort.

For five years, their visits had followed almost exactly the same routine. They announced their arrival at the last minute, drove up from the city empty-handed, and expected everything to be waiting. I bought the expensive groceries, prepared the meat, washed the guest linens, and cleaned after they left. Normally, Sarah’s latest message would have sent me racing toward the market for steaks, vegetables, craft beer, and everything else they expected. This time, however, I simply stared at my phone.

Standing alone in my spotless kitchen that morning, I realized something had changed.

I wasn’t merely tired from all the work. The exhaustion had become mental. For years, I had been spending my own money and energy to make their visits effortless while allowing myself to be treated like an employee in the house my husband and I had worked so hard to own.

And suddenly, I understood exactly what I was doing.

I was funding my own disrespect.

I didn’t cry. I didn’t call David to complain. I didn’t argue with Sarah about the way she’d spoken to me. Instead, an unexpected calm settled over me.

I left Sarah’s message on read, put my phone back into my pocket, and looked around my empty kitchen.

I wasn’t going to the butcher.

I wasn’t preparing the guest rooms.

Instead, I put on my gardening gloves and walked outside.

Usually, the Friday morning before one of their visits would have been consumed by chores. I’d spend at least two hundred dollars at the premium meat counter alone. Sarah wanted fresh wild-caught salmon. David expected thick ribeyes. Then came sparkling water, fruit, expensive cheeses, snacks, and everything else necessary to create the weekend they expected.

After shopping, I’d normally spend hours chopping vegetables, preparing marinades, cleaning the grill, and making sure fresh charcoal was waiting.

When they eventually arrived, David would give me a quick hug before heading toward the dock with a beer. Sarah would drop her bags in the hallway, inspect the house, and ask when dinner would be served.

But that Friday, the routine was dead.

I spent my morning tending the hydrangeas and pulling weeds while a gentle breeze came across the lake. For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed a summer Friday in my own home.

Around eleven, I made myself a simple lunch. My refrigerator was almost beautifully empty: leftover grilled chicken, salad greens, and homemade iced tea.

There were no enormous platters of meat waiting.

No expensive appetizers.

Nothing prepared for a barbecue.

I carried my lunch onto the porch, settled into my wooden rocking chair, and listened to the birds.

My daughter-in-law expected me to prepare everything, and I knew precisely what would happen when she discovered I hadn’t.

Then, right at noon, I heard tires crunching across my gravel driveway.

David’s familiar black SUV appeared.

But it wasn’t alone.

A second car was following directly behind it.
