My narcissistic sister tried seducing my fiancé, but long before I knew how far things might go, I had already learned to fear what she could do when she wanted something I had.

My narcissistic sister tried seducing my fiancé, but the fear behind that situation had been building for most of my life. Dove, my 29-year-old elder sister, had never seemed able to stand the idea of me having a life she believed I didn’t deserve. She was divorced, unemployed, and living with our parents after dropping out of college for a wealthy boyfriend who eventually became her husband and then divorced her. Growing up beside her had already taught me exactly how cruel she could be.

Dove had always been considered the pretty, smart one. My parents praised her and often sided with her, while I grew up feeling inadequate. People admired her appearance, and she knew how to turn that attention into a weapon against me. She told me nobody liked me, undermined my confidence, and left me carrying insecurities that followed me through childhood and adolescence.

Her behavior wasn’t limited to insults. She invited friends over while our parents were working, and they messed with my room. Once, they damaged a school project so badly that I nearly failed. When I considered telling Mom, Dove threatened to share embarrassing pictures of me with my classmates. At fourteen, I was frightened enough to stay quiet.

Trying to get help rarely seemed worthwhile because my parents usually overlooked what she did. Even when Dad occasionally challenged her behavior, Dove found ways to retaliate. She once used my phone to send embarrassing pictures to my group of girlfriends after I complained about her. Another time, she spilled coffee on my prom dress and then cried while insisting it had been an accident.

Eventually, I stopped confiding in my family and distanced myself. As I grew older, I began to understand that Dove’s behavior wasn’t something I could fix. Her relationships were chaotic, and the sister I remembered from my teenage years hadn’t really changed as an adult.

Things finally began improving for me after school. I worked hard, entered my dream college, struggled through the early years, and eventually landed the job I’d always wanted. That’s where I met Atlas at an office conference.

Atlas was smart, kind, and handsome, and our connection developed quickly. Within months, we were dating. We traveled together on vacations, trips, and treks, and our relationship grew stronger. Atlas was close to his own family and introduced me to his brothers and parents fairly early.

But I kept delaying his introduction to mine.

The reason was Dove.

After everything I’d experienced, I couldn’t shake the feeling that my narcissistic sister tried seducing my fiancé was exactly the kind of nightmare I might someday face. Now that my life was going better than hers, especially romantically, I feared she wouldn’t tolerate it.

After a year and a half with Atlas, I finally told Dad about him. Dad was delighted and invited us to dinner. I should have been excited, but I was equally stressed. Atlas knew about my family history, so I explained Dove’s behavior in detail. He calmly assured me he could handle it.

Then, only a few days later, something unexpected happened.

Dove called me.

She almost never called, yet suddenly she wanted to know about Atlas—who he was, what he was like, and when I planned to bring him home. Her sudden friendliness didn’t reassure me. It made me even more suspicious.

Now I had to decide whether introducing the man I loved to my family was worth the risk—because I already knew exactly which person was waiting there to meet him.
