Days Before My Birthday, I Knew My Sister Would Make Something Up To Make My Parents Cancel The Event.

I already knew my sister ruined my birthday celebrations whenever the attention wasn’t on her, but this year I could feel something coming days in advance. When my parents rushed to her yet again, something inside me finally changed.

Days before Raina Mercer’s 29th birthday, she already suspected her sister ruined my birthday pattern was about to repeat itself. Raina wasn’t expecting an extravagant celebration—just dinner at her parents’ house, a few friends, her aunt Celeste, chocolate cake, candles, and one peaceful evening where her name didn’t disappear behind somebody else’s crisis. But whenever Raina had an important moment, her younger sister Selah somehow seemed to have an emergency.

It had been happening for years. When Selah was fifteen, she fainted in a school parking lot on the night of Raina’s dinner reservation. Later, they discovered she’d skipped lunch after being ignored by a boy. At nineteen, Selah complained of chest pain while Raina’s roommates were lighting candles on her birthday cake, sending their father rushing to collect Selah from outside a bar. At twenty-four, another important weekend was interrupted when Selah thought she might be pregnant. She wasn’t. Every time, their parents ran to Selah while Raina was told not to make things worse.

Three days before this year’s birthday dinner, Raina was helping her mother prepare. Her mother was tying gold ribbon around a vase when she suggested they keep the celebration “simple” because everyone knew how things could get. Raina understood exactly what she meant. The problem had a name: Selah. But when Raina said so, her mother immediately defended her younger daughter, insisting Selah was under enormous stress. Raina pointed out that she was stressed too. Somehow, even while discussing Raina’s own birthday, her mother accused her of acting as though everything was about her.

That night, Selah sent Raina a message saying she couldn’t wait for Friday and promising she wouldn’t ruin the birthday this year. A second message followed, saying their mother had told her Raina was upset. Raina almost answered, but stopped herself.

She knew Selah’s apologies too well. They rarely seemed designed to repair anything. Instead, Raina felt they had a way of pulling attention back toward Selah.

The next morning, Selah appeared at Raina’s apartment carrying a bakery box and a candle, calling them peace offerings. Raina stayed near the door and immediately questioned whether this was happening before or after the next fake emergency.

Selah’s demeanor changed.

She admitted she hadn’t always handled things well, but Raina wasn’t interested in softened language anymore. When Raina accused her of sabotaging people, Selah fired back that perhaps Raina wouldn’t be so territorial whenever someone needed help if she didn’t expect her life to be perfect.

The word stung for reasons Selah apparently didn’t understand. Raina’s life wasn’t perfect. Her rent had been late earlier that year. Her relationship had ended six months before, and the loneliness hadn’t simply disappeared.

Raina told Selah to leave.

Before walking out, Selah quietly said something that stayed in Raina’s mind for the rest of the day: Friday wasn’t just about her.

By Friday morning, little things had already begun changing. Raina’s mother rearranged the seating plan twice. Her father asked whether Raina’s friend Naomi might come another time because they might need to make the evening more “family-focused.”

Raina could feel the familiar sister ruined my birthday cycle closing around her again.

By noon, she wasn’t wondering whether something would happen.

She was waiting for it.

A gasp. A slammed door. Someone calling her name in that particular frightened tone she knew too well.

At three that afternoon, it finally came.

Her father shouted from the backyard. Her mother dropped a stack of place cards and ran outside. Raina followed them across the lawn toward the guest cottage.

There, beside the stone path, Selah was curled on the ground in a cream sweater with one hand pressed over her stomach.

Her phone lay in the grass beside her.

And as Raina watched her mother fall to her knees, she knew her birthday was about to disappear all over again.
