I never imagined I would discover my wife sleeping with my brother, because I had known her almost my entire life and trusted both of them completely. I was 33, she was 31, and although we’d gone to high school together, we hadn’t moved in the same circles back then. I was more involved in athletics and sports, while she was a bookworm who spent much of her time in the library. I barely noticed her in high school. Years later, however, we ran into each other at a reunion, and suddenly nobody else in the room seemed important. We talked, connected immediately, started dating, and married about a year later. Everything happened quickly, but for the next 10 years, neither of us questioned whether we’d made the right decision.
Then tragedy struck my family. A little over a year ago, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer. Everyone was devastated, especially my brother. Only about three months after the diagnosis, she passed away. Her death left an enormous hole in our family, and my brother was struggling through one of the hardest periods of his life.
My wife had always seemed gentle and caring, so she stepped in to support him. She cooked meals and took them to his house, made sure he was eating, washed his clothes, and gave him someone to talk to. From everything I could see, she was simply being a compassionate sister-in-law. She appeared to be a rock for a grieving man who had just lost his wife. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine there could be anything more between them.

Then something happened that made me notice their behavior differently.
One day, my wife told me she was going to my brother’s house. I decided to stop by as well. I had a key and normally didn’t knock, so I simply walked inside and called out for both of them.
It took them a minute to appear.
When they finally came to meet me, they both emerged from the part of the house where the bedrooms were.
Even then, I didn’t seriously suspect anything. They explained that they’d been tidying up a room, and I accepted it. The three of us spent the rest of the evening together. I noticed my wife and brother sitting somewhat close together on the couch, but again, I dismissed it.
I trusted them.
Later, my brother sent my wife a text while we were home together. She explained that she planned to visit him the following day to help sort through some of his late wife’s belongings.
This time, something bothered me.
I felt that my wife might be becoming too much of a crutch for him. Instead of relying so heavily on her, I suggested that perhaps we could help pay for professional therapy. My wife brushed off the suggestion and said she would discuss it with him.
I understood that packing away his wife’s belongings would be painful. I was actually a little hurt that my brother hadn’t asked me to help, but I reminded myself that my wife had been supporting him since his loss.
So while driving home from work the next day, I decided to do something thoughtful.
I picked up takeout and headed toward my brother’s house, planning to surprise them and offer my help.
I unlocked the door as usual.
I was about to call out to them when I heard noises coming from inside.
And suddenly, every uncomfortable moment I’d dismissed while trusting my wife and my brother was about to become impossible to ignore.
