Brother had an affair with my fiancé for months and got her pregnant before my wedding, while my parents supported em. That is the betrayal I eventually found myself trying to explain, and even now, putting it into words feels almost impossible. I’m a 32-year-old man who, until a few months ago, believed I was building a future with the woman I’d loved for five years. I’ll call her Sarah. My younger brother, Mike, is twenty-nine, and he has spent practically his entire life being treated as the golden child of our family. To understand why everything hurt so deeply, you have to understand what growing up beside him was like.
Mike could do almost anything without consequences. If he broke something, I was blamed. If he started an argument, I was punished. Even when we both earned excellent grades, he received expensive rewards while I was simply told to keep working hard. My parents, Tom and Linda, always had an explanation. Mike was younger, more sensitive, or supposedly needed special attention. I was the older brother, so I was expected to understand and accept whatever happened.
The favoritism didn’t disappear as we grew older. When I earned admission to a good college with a partial scholarship, my parents barely acknowledged the achievement. But when Mike chose community college, they organized a celebration and bought him a car. I had spent years cycling miles to my part-time job, yet somehow his transportation deserved more attention than my accomplishments.
Eventually, I moved out and worked to support myself. I held two jobs, took out student loans, and tried to build a stable future. Mike dropped out of college after one semester, and our parents praised him for knowing what he wanted. They later financed several business ventures that failed, while I continued struggling to establish my career independently.

Even after leaving home, I couldn’t completely escape the comparisons. Holiday dinners became opportunities for my parents to question my career and praise Mike’s latest business idea. I was steadily progressing at work, but they still treated his uncertain ambitions as something more impressive.
I tried to maintain a relationship with him because he was my brother. Unfortunately, every attempt felt one-sided. If I shared good news, he immediately found a way to compete. If I received a promotion, he claimed to have an even bigger opportunity ahead. Nothing could simply be about me.
Then I met Sarah through someone connected to one of Mike’s previous girlfriends.
She was intelligent, funny, kind, and beautiful. We connected almost immediately, and for the first time, I felt genuinely appreciated. Being with her made me believe that the difficult parts of my childhood didn’t have to define the rest of my life.
My parents were predictably dismissive. They questioned why someone like Sarah would choose me and suggested she was out of my league. I tried to ignore their remarks.
Mike’s reaction was different.
Suddenly, he seemed fascinated by my relationship. He repeatedly asked about Sarah and wanted to know everything about her. Because I’d spent so many years wishing for a closer relationship with him, I welcomed what appeared to be genuine interest.
Sarah and I moved in together after a year of dating. We both had good jobs, traveled together, and talked about building a future. I imagined a successful career, a loving marriage, and perhaps children someday.
On our fourth anniversary, I proposed during a quiet dinner at home. She said yes.
We chose a long engagement because we wanted time to plan our wedding properly. I believed we had our whole lives ahead of us.
But when we announced the engagement, my parents offered little enthusiasm. Mike congratulated us with a smile that felt strangely unsettling.
At the time, I dismissed that feeling.
Looking back, I wish I’d paid closer attention to the way he watched us, because the brother I’d spent my life trying to connect with was about to become part of the greatest betrayal I’d ever experienced.
