Bought a baby monitor and accidentally caught my wife cheating in our child’s room. For nearly seven years, I had believed Naomi and I had built the kind of marriage that could survive ordinary ups and downs. We met at a local fair, started dating, and things took off from there. Our relationship had generally been wholesome, and I had always been grateful for that. We had waited before having a child because we wanted to enjoy our relative youth, but last year we decided the time was right. Naomi became pregnant, and our daughter arrived at the beginning of the year.
Becoming a father was the happiest moment of my life, but parenthood quickly showed us how completely a baby can reshape everyday life. Without dependable family or friends nearby, even a simple meal out required planning. A nanny was more than we could afford, and arranging someone to watch our daughter was rarely easy. I simply missed the ability to do something spontaneous with my wife once in a while. That was what first made me think about getting a baby monitor.
My idea was simple: if our daughter was sleeping, perhaps Naomi and I could occasionally step somewhere extremely close and hurry back if she stirred. Naomi was apprehensive about leaving the baby, even briefly. I promised we would never go anywhere more than a five-minute walk from home. We didn’t settle the issue, and the conversation was left hanging. Meanwhile, Naomi had her flower shop on the corner of our street, operating from a store my late uncle had left me. She had employees helping her, while I worked remotely.

One day while Naomi was at the shop, I impulsively ordered a Wi-Fi baby monitor. I knew we hadn’t fully agreed to buy one, but I assumed convincing her wouldn’t be difficult. It arrived the next day while she was working, and I installed the small camera in our baby’s room. With the lights on it was noticeable, but in a darker room it blended in. The camera connected to Wi-Fi and let me check the room through an app on my phone from anywhere.
Then I went back to work—and somehow forgot to tell Naomi I had installed it.
The following day, I had several errands to run. Just as I was preparing to leave, Naomi asked me to take our daughter with me. She said she was exhausted from the week and needed some time alone. I was disappointed, but she had asked me before and I hadn’t been able to help then, so this time I agreed. I packed everything our daughter needed and headed out.
The day went smoothly. My daughter behaved wonderfully, and I made it halfway through my errands without trouble. Eventually, I stopped in my car to eat some fast food. That was when a notification from the baby monitor appeared on my phone.
The app had detected activity.
My first thought was ordinary: Naomi must have gone into the baby’s room for something. I opened the app expecting to see exactly that. Instead, the screen showed my wife with another man in the room. At first, what I saw looked frightening enough that I thought she might be in danger. My heart jumped, and I started the car almost instantly.
Then I heard sounds coming through the monitor.
Within seconds, my understanding of the scene changed. The man wasn’t attacking Naomi. The two of them were making out in our daughter’s room. Concern turned into shock so quickly that I could barely process it. I kept staring at the screen, unable to look away, until one thought finally cut through the disbelief: I needed to record what I was seeing.
And as I started recording my screen, I realized the baby monitor I had bought on a whim had just shown me something I never imagined I would see.
