At The Reading Of The Will, My Aunt Laughed. He Always Said I Was His Favourite, Of Course I Get The House. My Cousin Winked, And We Get…

My aunt expected to inherit my grandfather’s house, and my cousins were already claiming his lake property—but none of them knew what he had secretly entrusted to me before his death.

At the Reading of the Will, my aunt Vanessa laughed confidently, convinced that my grandfather Arthur had left her his house. My cousin was already asking about the lake property, as though the family’s inheritance had been divided long before anyone opened the documents. My mother sat silently while everyone else seemed certain about what they deserved. Then they turned toward me, accusing me of not even visiting Grandpa in the hospital. I nodded without arguing. There was something they didn’t know about his final days, something he had placed in my hands before he died. And as I listened to their accusations, I remembered the small USB drive he had asked me to keep.

My name is Oliver, and I’m thirty-three years old. I’ve spent a long time trying to understand what happened to my family after Grandpa Arthur passed away. Growing up, I believed family meant loyalty, kindness, and being present when someone needed you. But I eventually discovered that some relatives cared more about what Grandpa owned than about the man himself. Arthur was my hero. He wasn’t someone who expressed his love through dramatic speeches or expensive promises. He simply showed up. When I broke my leg at eight years old, he stayed overnight at the hospital. When my father abandoned us the following year, Grandpa helped my mother keep the lights on.

My mother was Arthur’s youngest daughter, and we lived in a modest rental across town. Meanwhile, other relatives enjoyed comfortable lives, including boats, vacation homes, and renovations funded through Grandpa’s generosity. We struggled financially, but Mom rarely complained. I sometimes wondered why we weren’t invited to Aunt Vanessa’s pool parties like my cousins. Whenever I asked, Mom would say that some invitations came with strings attached. I didn’t understand her meaning until I was older. Our relatives viewed her as the family’s charity case, someone whose circumstances supposedly made her less deserving of respect. They never seemed interested in how hard she worked or how little she asked from Grandpa.

At the Reading of the Will, those old family divisions were impossible to ignore. I could still remember how relatives dismissed Mom while expecting Grandpa to finance their comfortable lifestyles. They behaved as though his generosity was something they had earned simply by belonging to the family.

Grandpa never openly criticized them. Instead, he showed his feelings through small gestures. He invited me into his workshop, where he carved beautiful wooden clocks, and trusted me to repair his old record player. He believed certain things should be passed down through someone’s own hands rather than through money alone.

Then Grandpa was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The news devastated me. Messages of sympathy appeared in the family group chat, along with promises that everyone would visit soon. But those promises quickly faded into silence.

Before long, I learned that Uncle Greg had used Grandpa’s name in a real estate deal. Aunt Vanessa was also trying to persuade him to transfer the lake house into her name before his condition worsened.

Grandpa responded with a quiet smile and told me the truth would eventually come out.

He began asking me to help organize his finances, property records, and voicemail. At first, I thought he simply wanted my company.

During his final weeks, I visited nearly every day. Sometimes we talked for hours. Sometimes we sat together in silence.

Then, shortly before he died, he handed me an envelope containing a USB drive and told me not to open it yet.

At the Reading of the Will, with my relatives already making accusations, I finally understood that his strange request might have been far more important than I had imagined.
