My stepbrother stabbed me in the middle of the night, but the most terrifying part wasn’t the wound—it was realizing that the people who should have protected me were more concerned about keeping something hidden.

Stepbrother stabbed me at 2 AM, and somehow my parents treated the nightmare as though I were the problem. I never imagined that a violent attack inside my own home could leave me feeling more abandoned by my family than by the person who hurt me. But the atmosphere in that hospital corridor made one thing painfully clear: something was terribly wrong. Detective Monroe was speaking to Karen and Douglas when he suddenly mentioned evidence recovered from my stepbrother Mason’s school locker. Karen had already been preparing to leave, her hand resting against the doorframe. The moment she heard the detective’s words, she stopped moving. Douglas immediately demanded to know which locker he meant. Neither of them seemed prepared for the answer.

Detective Monroe calmly identified Millbrook Falls High and recited the locker combination: 14-27-6. His precision made my stomach tighten. He explained that officers had searched the locker as part of the assault investigation. Karen interrupted, insisting that Mason was eighteen and therefore not a minor. Monroe didn’t argue. He simply made it clear that the investigation would proceed regardless. Then he began describing what the officers had discovered. There was a folding hunting knife with a five-and-a-half-inch blade, consistent with the injuries documented by Dr. Fitch that night. Hearing those details while still recovering from the attack was horrifying. I could barely process what he was saying.

But the knife wasn’t the only thing inside the locker. Investigators had also discovered forty-one photographs of me, Savannah, printed at a drugstore kiosk. Some had been taken through my bedroom window. Others showed me sleeping, completely unaware that someone was watching. The thought made my skin crawl. Detective Monroe then mentioned a spiral notebook. He didn’t read its contents aloud, explaining that his partner was still cataloguing everything as evidence. The newest entry was dated eleven days earlier. Whatever was written inside those pages, Monroe seemed deeply concerned about what it might reveal.

Douglas wanted to see the notebook immediately, but the detective explained that the district attorney’s office would handle the evidence through the proper legal process. My father insisted that Mason was his son. I waited for him to ask about my injuries, my pain, or whether I was frightened. He never did. Instead, every question seemed directed toward protecting Mason or challenging the investigation. I had been stabbed, yet my own family seemed more disturbed by the possibility of evidence than by what had happened to me.

Detective Monroe warned them against describing the attack as a single moment of lost control. He believed the evidence suggested something more deliberate. Karen’s expression became strangely still. I couldn’t understand what she was thinking, but her reaction frightened me almost as much as the detective’s discoveries.

Nearby, Officer Delgado caught my eye and offered a small, silent nod. It was a simple gesture, yet it meant more than anything my parents had said. For the first time, someone seemed to recognize how alone I felt.

I remained at Whitmore Regional for four days. Dr. Ansel Fitch, the trauma surgeon who treated me, explained that the blade had narrowly missed my spleen and kidney. The difference between surviving and something far worse had been terrifyingly small.

Then he said something I couldn’t forget. The wound’s position suggested the attacker might have known exactly where to strike.

I had already survived the knife, but I was beginning to wonder what the police might discover about the person who had been standing over me that night—and why my parents seemed so afraid of the truth.
