Are You Serious? I Asked. He Hung Up. First Thought After Being Fired During My Vacation In 12 Years, He Has No Idea Who I’m Having Wine With.

Being fired during my vacation should have ruined everything, but my boss had no idea who was sitting across the table when he ended my twelve-year career.

I had just been fired during my vacation—the first real vacation I’d taken in twelve years—and my immediate thought was that my boss had absolutely no idea who I was having wine with. I looked across the table at the CEO sitting opposite me and realized things were about to become very interesting. We were at Silverado Vineyards, and a glass of 2019 Cabernet sat in front of me while the afternoon sun washed over the Napa Valley hills. For once, I wasn’t bent over a computer repairing manufacturing systems or answering emergency calls about failed production lines. I was simply sitting there, actually tasting my wine instead of surviving on coffee, when my entire life changed.

My name is Roy Patterson. I’m forty-eight years old, and I was the Senior System Integration Director at TechFlow Systems. In practical terms, I was the person responsible for keeping million-dollar manufacturing lines from becoming extremely expensive pieces of useless machinery. For twelve years, emergencies had shaped my life. But that afternoon, surrounded by vineyards and California sunshine, I finally allowed myself to wonder what my life might look like if I stopped spending all my time fixing everyone else’s problems. Then my phone buzzed. I should have ignored it. After twelve years of being permanently on call, though, ignoring a work call wasn’t something I’d learned how to do.

The name on my screen was Glenn Harper—my boss. Glenn was forty-five, armed with an MBA, and had the kind of manufacturing experience that seemed to come from touring a factory during business school. The moment I answered, he demanded to know what I thought I was doing by taking vacation during preparations for the Steinberg Industries audit. I calmly reminded him that my leave had been approved three weeks earlier. Glenn’s response was immediate: he didn’t approve of laziness. Then he told me to consider myself terminated, effective immediately.

I expected the world to collapse around me.

Instead, I felt something I hadn’t expected at all.

Relief.

I actually laughed—not because Glenn’s decision was funny, but because suddenly I could see how ridiculous my loyalty had been. Twelve years of answering calls, solving emergencies, and keeping systems functioning, and this was how easily he believed he could discard me.

I ended the call before he could add another threat.

Then the man sitting across the small table asked if I was in trouble.

His name was Vincent Cross.

A booking mix-up had resulted in us sharing the table, and Vincent looked like the kind of man who owned everything his eyes landed on. He was in his late fifties, confident without needing to advertise it, and I’d already discovered that he actually did own quite a bit.

I raised my wine glass and told him I’d just been fired.

Instead of giving me the uncomfortable sympathy most strangers would offer, Vincent looked interested.

Then he tapped his glass against mine and said perhaps it was finally time for the right people to notice what I could do.

I didn’t understand the significance of those words yet.

My phone began buzzing again.

Messages from Glenn appeared one after another. He wanted my laptop returned immediately. HR would contact me about company equipment. He warned that my non-compete agreement would make sure nobody else in the industry hired me.

Months earlier, those messages might have destroyed my vacation.

Now they sounded strangely hollow.

Vincent noticed me reading them and calmly suggested that Glenn might already be realizing he’d made an enormous mistake.

I placed the phone face down.

Across the vineyard, rows of vines disappeared toward the hills, and for the first time since being fired during my vacation, I realized I wasn’t afraid of what came next.

Then Vincent began talking about TechFlow—and what he said made me understand that this stranger knew far more about my company, and my value to it, than I’d imagined.
