When a woman with a baby appeared at my front door with a key and claimed my home belonged to her husband, one familiar name made the impossible suddenly terrifying.

When a woman with a baby on her hip knocked on my front door one Sunday afternoon, I was in the middle of frosting a cake. I opened the door expecting a neighbor, a kid selling popcorn, or perhaps the UPS guy. Instead, the stranger looked at me and asked why I was living in her husband’s house. I froze with buttercream still on my thumb and told her she must have the wrong address—but she confidently pointed toward the brass numbers beside my door.

She looked about thirty, tired, with dark hair pulled back and a diaper bag hanging from one shoulder. A baby boy wearing a blue knit hat rested on her hip, chewing a plastic giraffe. Then she said the address aloud: 1412 Alder Street. Scott had told her this was their house, she explained, and that he had been fixing it up for them for a year.

Then she produced a brass key. Right in front of me, she inserted it into my lock and tried to turn it as casually as if she had done it countless times before. But the key wouldn’t move. She jiggled it, removed it, examined it, and tried again. Nothing happened. Confused, she insisted it was supposed to work. As I watched this stranger attempting to unlock my front door, I suddenly knew exactly who I thought she was.

Six months earlier, my husband Scott had warned me about a woman from Medford. Scott and I had been married for nine years, and his job as a pharmaceutical sales representative regularly took him south to doctors’ offices and clinics. Every Tuesday through Thursday, he stayed at the same hotel in Medford before returning home for the rest of the week.

I had grown accustomed to the arrangement. Three nights alone didn’t bother me. I could read in the bathtub or eat cereal for dinner. But one Thursday night in April, Scott came home and sat across from me at our kitchen table looking unusually serious.

He told me there was something I needed to know so I wouldn’t be blindsided.

According to Scott, a receptionist at one of the clinics had become fixated on him. He said she had sent him texts, appeared at his hotel, and even told people they were in a relationship. Scott described the claims as insane and said he had reported her to his manager and considered getting a restraining order.

Then his warning became personal.

The woman knew my name. She might even know where we lived.

Scott specifically told me that if she ever appeared at our house, I shouldn’t let her inside—and I shouldn’t believe anything she said because she would have an entire story prepared.

At the time, I reached across the kitchen table and took my husband’s hand. I thought his honesty was sweet. I believed he was protecting me by warning me that another woman might eventually appear at our door.

That night, Scott checked the front door, then the back door, then returned to check the front door again. I watched from the hallway and reminded him that it was locked. He simply said he wanted to make sure because you never knew what someone like that might do.

Then he came to bed, wrapped his arm around me, and quickly fell asleep.

I lay awake listening to the quiet house, feeling protected.

But now a woman with a baby was standing at the exact front door Scott had repeatedly checked, holding a key he apparently expected her to have.

And as I stared at that key, I was beginning to realize that the warning Scott gave me six months earlier might never have been about protecting me from her at all.
