My sister demanded my life savings after her marriage collapsed, and I could hardly believe how quickly my family’s expectations became my problem. My older sister, Anna, had married Derek five years earlier. He was a successful professional from a financially comfortable family, and together they appeared to have everything anyone could want. Derek’s parents helped pay for their wedding and contributed toward the down payment on their house. Anna had never been especially interested in building a career or saving money, preferring social activities and enjoying the present. Derek, however, was hardworking, financially secure, and apparently devoted to her. From the outside, their marriage seemed like a dream. But before the wedding, his family’s lawyers had insisted on an agreement that would eventually become extremely important.
Because Derek’s family had significant assets, his parents wanted a prenuptial agreement protecting the wealth he brought into the marriage. Derek explained that the arrangement was standard in his family and was intended to protect his inheritance and premarital savings. Any assets the couple accumulated together would ordinarily be divided if they divorced. However, the agreement also contained a strict infidelity clause. According to its terms, a spouse who was unfaithful would lose any entitlement to spousal support or a share of the assets accumulated during the marriage. Anna hated the idea. She argued with Derek about it, and our mother considered the entire agreement insulting. I stayed out of their dispute because it was their marriage and their decision. Eventually, Anna signed because she wanted the wedding and the comfortable future she envisioned.
For the next five years, everything appeared to work beautifully for Anna. She lived in a lovely house, traveled frequently, drove a nice car, and received a generous allowance from Derek. She didn’t need to work, and he covered their expenses. He also treated our family with kindness and respect. My own life was very different. I worked in a technical field, earned a steady income, and saved carefully toward buying a small apartment. I wasn’t wealthy, but I had spent years avoiding unnecessary expenses and building financial security. My family knew how important that goal was to me. They also knew I’d accumulated substantial savings. At the time, I never imagined that my sister demanded my life savings would become the central conflict between us.

Then, about a month before everything erupted, Anna went out with old friends from her hometown. During the evening, she encountered her high school ex-boyfriend at a bar.
What happened afterward shattered the image of her perfect marriage. Anna spent the night with him, and someone who knew both her and Derek saw them together.
Word reached Derek through a mutual acquaintance. When he confronted Anna, she admitted what had happened.
Derek was devastated. He told her to pack a bag and leave their house that same day. He also made it clear that he intended to file for divorce.
Anna moved into our mother’s house, crying that her life was over.
For weeks, she contacted lawyers, hoping someone could challenge the agreement she’d signed before her wedding. According to Anna, the lawyers repeatedly warned her that the case would be extremely difficult and expensive.
She had no savings of her own, despite years of financial support from Derek. Her allowance had gone toward clothes, salon appointments, and lunches with friends.
Eventually, she found an aggressive attorney who claimed there might be a small chance of securing a settlement through a lengthy legal fight.
Then Anna and Mom asked me to sit down for a serious conversation.
I soon discovered that my sister demanded my life savings because she believed I should finance that fight.
The amount she wanted was staggering.
And my mother was sitting right beside her, nodding in agreement.
