Four Days Into His Internship, My Boss’s Son Presented My Project To Our Biggest Client With His Name On The Cover. The Client Let Him Finish, Then Turned…

My boss’s son presented my project to our biggest client after just four days as an intern, but when the client started asking questions, it became clear who really understood the work.

My boss’s son presented my project to our biggest client with his name on the cover, even though he had been an intern for only four working days. I had spent fourteen months developing that engineering report, and I was about to watch someone else take credit for every calculation, drawing, and recommendation inside it.

The binders arrived at 9:58 that morning.

Twelve heavy, spiral-bound reports were distributed around the conference table, one for each person attending the meeting.

I had written every page and personally sent the final document to the print shop the previous Friday.

But when my copy landed in front of me, something was terribly wrong.

The cover identified the Brazos Plains Municipal Water Authority’s Arsenic Treatment Expansion, a 60% Design Report dated June 16, 2026.

Beneath the project information was a name.

Soren Pflueger.

Not mine.

I read the cover twice, wondering whether the print shop had accidentally mixed up the documents.

Then I looked toward the projector.

Soren stood at the front of the room wearing a brand-new blue suit, holding a presentation clicker and smiling confidently at our biggest client’s general manager.

He was twenty-three years old, had graduated from college in May, and had started his summer internship the previous Thursday.

His father, Kennard Pflueger, was the managing partner of our engineering firm.

And now his son was preparing to present fourteen months of my work as though it belonged to him.

Nobody had warned me that my name would be replaced.

Nobody had explained why an inexperienced intern was leading this presentation.

I sat silently, waiting to see what would happen.

The meeting took place in a modest boardroom at the Water Authority’s office in Levelland, Texas.

A long wooden table filled most of the room. A whiteboard hung nearby, an aerial photograph of a well field decorated the wall, and an old window air conditioner rattled in the background.

Across the table sat the Authority’s general manager, Mr. Bull, alongside his operations manager, finance director, and plant operators.

Kennard sat with his arms folded, looking remarkably proud.

Soren clicked to his first slide.

It was one I had prepared in April.

He appeared nervous but well rehearsed, reading through the presentation and explaining how the Authority supplied groundwater to five small towns west of Lubbock.

He described the naturally occurring arsenic in the water and the need to expand the treatment plant’s capacity.

So far, everything he said was correct.

Then he reached slide eleven.

The treatment process.

Soren confidently announced that we were recommending reverse osmosis.

I watched two plant operators exchange glances.

Vin Garza, the chief operator who had worked beside me during weeks of early-morning testing, slowly turned a page in his binder.

Then he looked directly at me.

His eyebrows rose slightly.

I knew exactly why.

Our design had nothing to do with reverse osmosis.

We had developed an iron-based treatment process that removed arsenic through coagulation and filtration.

It was less expensive and conserved precious groundwater, something especially important in West Texas.

My boss’s son presented my project to our biggest client without understanding its most important engineering decision.

Yet he continued speaking.

He repeated the incorrect treatment method four more times.

Mr. Bull never interrupted.

He listened patiently until the presentation ended.

Then he removed his reading glasses, folded them carefully, and placed them on the table.

Instead of looking toward Soren or his father, he turned his chair toward me.

The room fell silent. And his next words made it clear that the real presentation was only beginning.
