My mother gave me just 72 hours to surrender the farmhouse my grandfather left me, but what hurt most was knowing she wanted to give it to the same brother who had laughed when I had nowhere else to go.

Mom gave me 72 hours to sign my late grandfather’s worthless farmhouse over to my brother, and I couldn’t believe how casually she expected me to surrender the only home I truly owned. The same brother had laughed when I moved into that house with no heat, almost no money, and a roof that leaked whenever it rained. I had spent years working on the property while my family called it the worst decision of my life. Yet now a certified letter was sitting on my kitchen counter, propped against a jar of nails as though someone had simply walked inside and left it there. I had just returned from the hardware store carrying copper pipe fittings when I noticed the envelope. Its thick paper and formal legal heading immediately caught my attention. The name Frankowski & Associates appeared across the top, the same law firm my mother had used during my grandfather’s estate proceedings. I opened it with dusty hands, read the contents, and then read them again because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Inside was a prepared deed-transfer document naming me as the person giving up the property and my brother Mitchell as the person receiving it. All that remained was my signature. My mother had attached a handwritten note on her familiar lavender stationery, instructing me to sign and return everything within seventy-two hours. She warned me not to make the situation harder than necessary. I stood in my kitchen wondering how she could possibly believe this was reasonable. This wasn’t the first time she had tried to interfere with my decisions, but involving a law firm made the situation feel different. My grandfather Virgil had died four years earlier at seventy-nine, leaving behind a farmhouse on forty-two acres of land outside Bremerton, Oregon. He had built the house with his own father in 1961, and although it had fallen into serious disrepair, it held memories that mattered to me. The property was surrounded by timber, with a gravel road providing access.

The house itself was modest, with old cedar siding, aging framing, and a crawlspace that flooded during spring. Its roof had been patched so many times that it barely resembled a proper roof anymore. When my grandfather’s will was read, nobody seemed surprised that he had left the farmhouse to me. I was the only grandchild who had spent meaningful time there. Mitchell had visited once as a teenager, complained about the lack of phone service, and never returned. My cousin Delaney lived far away and had little connection to the property. My mother had described the inheritance as worthless, saying the house wasn’t even worth the taxes. She believed my grandfather had made a sentimental decision rather than a practical one. Mitchell stood beside her at the funeral reception with a familiar half-smile, as though he expected me to discover that accepting the farmhouse had been a terrible mistake.

I moved into the farmhouse three weeks later, and the reality was even harder than my family imagined.

The furnace didn’t work, the propane tank was empty, and I couldn’t afford the six hundred dollars needed to fill it.

Water leaked through the roof in four different places, including directly above the electrical breaker panel.

The plumbing was badly corroded, and the kitchen faucet produced a thin brown stream that smelled of rust.

I had only eight hundred dollars in my checking account. After losing my apartment in Corvallis because my work hours had been reduced, I had nowhere else to go.

The farmhouse was the only property I owned outright, so I loaded my belongings into my truck and moved into the hills.

When Mitchell learned where I was living, he called me.

I was sitting on the living room floor wearing two jackets and a sleeping bag, eating cold soup from a can because the stove didn’t work.

He couldn’t believe I had actually moved into our grandfather’s old house.

Then he started laughing.

He reminded me that the place had no heat and asked what I planned to do when the temperature dropped.

I told him I would figure it out.

But as his laughter continued, I realized that my family wasn’t interested in helping me survive in that house.

They were waiting for me to admit that I had made a mistake.

And now, years later, my mother expected me to sign that very same farmhouse over to him in just seventy-two hours.
