My Mom Dropped Of My Kids At A Gas Station 40 Miles From Home Because, They Were Being Too Loud In The Car. My 10 Year Old Called Me From…

When Brittany learned her mom dropped of my kids at a gas station 40 miles from home, the explanation from her frightened 10-year-old made the situation even more disturbing.

Brittany couldn’t believe that her mom dropped of my kids at a gas station 40 miles from home simply because they had supposedly been too loud in the car. Her 10-year-old son Noah had called from a stranger’s phone crying, and when Brittany finally picked up her children, Noah revealed something even more unsettling: Grandma had warned them that if they told their mother what happened, she would never speak to them again. Brittany, a 34-year-old flight attendant based in Texas, had previously thought her mother’s worst babysitting decision was giving seven-year-old Lily enough Dr. Pepper to keep her awake until almost two in the morning.

Brittany would have gladly returned to worrying about caffeinated children. Instead, the terrifying phone call came just after she landed in Dallas following the final leg of a two-day work trip. Because flight attendants can’t answer their phones while working a flight, Brittany sometimes didn’t see messages until the aircraft landed and passengers finally cleared the aisle. That afternoon, she switched her phone off airplane mode and immediately saw eleven missed calls.

Seven calls were from an unknown number. Three were from her ex-husband Mark. One was from her mother. Brittany stared at the screen and instantly knew something was wrong. She called the unknown number first. A man answered, but before Brittany could ask who he was, she heard Noah crying in the background. That alone terrified her because Noah wasn’t a child who cried easily.

Noah had once split his chin open falling from a scooter and seemed more concerned about getting blood on his Pokémon shirt than needing five stitches.

Brittany immediately demanded to know where her children were.

The stranger assured her they were safe with him and his wife.

That didn’t make Brittany feel better.

The couple explained that they had stopped at a gas station roughly 40 miles from Brittany’s home and discovered Noah and Lily sitting alone on a bench outside. There was no grandmother nearby, no other responsible adult watching them, and no car waiting for them.

Just two children and Lily’s little purple backpack.

The temperature was in the low 90s.

Neither child had a phone, but Noah had memorized his mother’s number. He approached strangers until he found a woman willing to let him make the call.

Brittany asked where her mother was.

The man hesitated.

Then Noah came to the phone and told her Grandma had left them.

At first, Brittany thought she had misunderstood.

She asked what he meant.

Noah said they had been too loud.

Brittany’s mind struggled to process what she was hearing. She could understand a grandmother accidentally forgetting a pickup. She could imagine car trouble or even a frightening medical emergency.

But deliberately removing a 10-year-old and a seven-year-old from the car at a gas station and driving away because they were noisy made no sense.

Brittany told the couple to stay with her children. She immediately informed airport operations that she had an emergency, grabbed her bag, and headed for the gas station.

She called her mother.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Then Brittany contacted Mark, whom she had divorced three years earlier. They weren’t close friends, but they normally managed to co-parent without major problems. Mark sounded frantic. Noah had called him too, but work had left him almost two hours away.

Brittany assured him she was going to get the children.

Then her mother finally called back.

Her first words weren’t an apology.

Before Brittany could even fully confront the woman whose actions had terrified her children, her mother casually told her not to get dramatic because they were fine.

And Brittany was about to discover that the claim that her mom dropped of my kids because they were simply “too loud” wasn’t nearly the whole story.
