I met my girlfriend at a funeral, fell hard for her, and eight months later one unsettling detail about our seemingly perfect relationship made me wonder what I had overlooked.

I met my girlfriend at a funeral, and what began in one of the strangest possible places eventually became an eight-month relationship I thought was genuinely good. I’m 27, and Ellie is 24. I had gone to the funeral only to support my friend Marcus, whose uncle had died. Marcus had been extremely close to him, so when he asked me to come for moral support, I couldn’t refuse. I had no idea that day would introduce me to someone who would become such an important part of my life.

The funeral took place in an old church filled with stained glass and polished wood. During the gloomy service, I stayed beside Marcus and supported him. At the reception afterward, his relatives gathered around him to share memories, so I stepped away and gave them space. I ended up talking in a corner with an older family friend who had known Marcus’s uncle for decades and was sharing surprisingly funny stories.

I was smiling at one of those stories when a woman across the room noticed me. She approached holding a glass of amber-colored drink. Her hair was in a tasteful updo, and her simple black dress was appropriate yet striking. Then she opened our conversation with an unexpectedly morbid joke about me smiling too much at a funeral. Her bluntness caught me so completely off guard that I nearly choked on my drink while laughing.

The older gentleman quietly excused himself, leaving the two of us alone. We spent the afternoon talking and connected unexpectedly. Her name was Ellie. She was the daughter of the deceased man’s neighbor and had grown up calling him Uncle Joe despite no blood relation.

From there, conversation came easily. We talked about our jobs, discovered a shared love of obscure indie films, and even agreed on our hatred of olives on pizza. By the end of the wake, her number was saved in my phone, and I drove home unable to stop thinking about her. Meeting someone at a funeral sounded like the beginning of either a terrible romantic comedy or a horror movie, yet Ellie felt different—funny, witty, pretty, and genuinely fun to be around.

Three days later, I asked her out. She accepted eagerly. Our first date was at a small ramen place I loved, and although I worried it might seem too casual, she appeared genuinely excited. We talked for hours, and her thoughtful questions made me feel fascinating. Afterward, we walked downtown, ate ice cream despite the cold weather, and ended the evening with an intense kiss by my car.

More dates followed: hiking through a state park, then a cooking class where we both failed at soufflés. By our third date, I was already falling hard. The first three months disappeared quickly. My friends immediately liked her charm and quick wit, and we began spending more nights together than apart.

At six months, when my lease ended, moving in together felt natural. We rented a two-bedroom house with a small backyard where I could grill and Ellie could create the vegetable garden she wanted. It wasn’t much, but it felt like ours, and I loved coming home to her every day.

There was only one thing that seemed strange: I still hadn’t met many of Ellie’s friends. She had introduced me to her parents early, yet there was always a reason I couldn’t meet her friend group—someone was busy, plans were canceled, or another complication appeared. I didn’t push her because I assumed she would introduce us when she was ready.

Looking back, though, I should have wondered why the woman I met at a funeral seemed so determined to keep one part of her life away from me.
