Decided Not to Raise My Husband’s Affair Twins After His Tragic Death, Despite Pushback From His Parents and Others Demanding Otherwise.

I never imagined anyone would expect me to raise my husband’s affair twins, yet after his sudden death, that impossible responsibility was being pushed directly onto me.

I decided I couldn’t raise my husband’s affair twins after his tragic death, despite pressure from his parents and others who believed I should take responsibility for them. I’m 45, and my husband was 49. We had been married for 23 years when I discovered he’d been having an affair with a 20-year-old woman since 2020. I only learned the truth this year, after his affair partner gave birth to twin boys in March. Obviously, divorce was where our marriage was heading.

We had been working through the divorce for some time. It was complicated because we owned property together and needed an accountant, especially because my husband had used money from our shared account for his affair. Finally, it seemed like we were approaching the end of the process. Then everything changed in an instant: my husband and the woman he’d been cheating with were both killed in a car crash.

By some miracle, the twin babies weren’t harmed. Suddenly, however, they were orphaned. Neither set of grandparents could permanently care for them. My husband’s parents were both in assisted living, he had no siblings, and the only aunt who potentially could take the boys refused because she’d been childfree her entire life. On their mother’s side, her parents couldn’t provide long-term care either, while her only sister lived overseas.

Because my husband and I were still legally married and he hadn’t changed his will, his assets were set to pass to me and our two children.

I wasn’t heartless enough to leave the babies with absolutely nothing. I agreed that whoever eventually became their legal guardian could receive the approximately $25,000 remaining in our shared savings account.

But there was a much bigger problem.

Nobody wanted to take the twins permanently.

That’s when my in-laws began pressuring me to take them into my home and raise them myself.

I didn’t want to.

Not even a little.

I knew the boys were completely innocent. None of what happened was their fault. But I also knew myself well enough to recognize that I would probably always carry some resentment connected to what their existence represented. I worried that I wouldn’t love them the way they deserved and that I would inevitably favor my own children.

Before discovering the affair, I had genuinely loved my husband and believed our marriage was happy. We had two daughters, ages 14 and 16. We’d had ordinary disagreements over the years, but our relationship had never looked anything like what it became after his betrayal was exposed.

Once I learned about the affair, my husband started blaming me for his cheating. He called me names, became abusive, and even tried to force me out of the house—despite the house being my childhood home and not shared marital property.

Now I was raising two teenage daughters alone.

They were struggling too. They wanted little to do with their father while the divorce was happening, and because the affair had become known through the birth of the twins, there wasn’t an easy way to hide what had happened from them.

Most of my friends believed raising the babies wasn’t my responsibility. But my in-laws, the twins’ maternal grandparents, and even my own mother wanted me to raise my husband’s affair twins.

That pressure hurt, especially coming from my mother.

And there was almost no time left to decide.

I was told I had until the following week. The babies were temporarily staying with their maternal grandparents, but that arrangement couldn’t continue indefinitely. If nobody stepped forward, the boys could enter foster care.

I felt terrible for two babies who had done absolutely nothing wrong—but deep down, I was already painfully certain of the answer I wanted to give.
