My brother’s toxic best friend became the center of a wedding argument I never expected to have. My brother is 29 and has been with his girlfriend, Leah, for about two years. Everyone in our family likes Leah because she’s genuinely nice. I’m getting married next April, and when we sent invitations, my fiancé and I chose to address them to households rather than individuals. My brother’s invitation went to his apartment, where he lives with Leah, so as far as I was concerned, everything was straightforward.
Last Thursday, our immediate family gathered at my parents’ house to help them with some bookkeeping. While we were there, I asked my brother about Leah’s dietary restrictions because she’s vegetarian for health reasons and can’t eat certain raw vegetables. Instead of answering, he casually told me Leah wasn’t coming to the wedding. He planned to bring his girl best friend, Amanda, instead. That immediately bothered me because his relationship with Amanda has always seemed strange.
In my opinion, Amanda has spent years stringing my brother along. He insists he doesn’t have feelings for her, but I’ve watched the same pattern repeat itself. She dates other men and distances herself from my brother, only to become attached to him again whenever those relationships start falling apart. Once, my brother was supposed to travel to Spain with his then-girlfriend, Amanda, and Amanda’s boyfriend. After Amanda’s relationship ended, she became uncomfortable traveling with my brother’s girlfriend—so my brother went to Spain alone with Amanda instead. His girlfriend understandably broke up with him.

So when my brother announced that Amanda would be attending my wedding instead of Leah, I asked whether Leah already had other plans.
She didn’t.
According to him, Amanda had asked to come because the wedding would give her an opportunity to see our old high-school friend group again. That explanation didn’t make me feel any better. If I had wanted Amanda at my wedding, I would have invited her myself.
I don’t enjoy being around her. Amanda can be mean and cold, particularly toward other women. At social events, she has a habit of making disparaging remarks, and after about an hour she often creates some kind of scene—running away crying or sitting angrily at a table while demanding everyone leave her alone, usually followed by some cryptic remark about being hurt.
I didn’t want that behavior at my wedding.
So I told my brother I was revoking his plus-one and that Amanda wasn’t coming. He immediately accused me of being misogynistic and bigoted because, according to him, I didn’t understand opposite-sex friendships.
That wasn’t the issue at all. My own fiancé has a female childhood friend who will be his best woman at our wedding, and I love her. The difference is that she respects boundaries. She includes me, and when I began dating my fiancé, she made a genuine effort to welcome me into their friend group.
I told my brother my decision was final. He could accept it or refuse to come, but I also told him I would personally invite Leah because I genuinely liked her.
That’s when the argument became much worse.
My brother screamed at me and told me to stay out of his business. I fired back that he needed to deal with his strange feelings for Amanda. Now he’s furious with me. My father thinks the entire situation is unnecessary drama and none of our business, while my mother is furious with my brother.
But one question remained: had I simply protected my wedding from someone I didn’t want there—or had I crossed a line by interfering in my brother’s relationship with his toxic best friend?
