While On Vacation With My Cousins, My Phone Lit Up- “Get On A Plane Home…”

“Get on a plane home” was the message that appeared on Claire’s phone while she was relaxing on vacation with her cousins. The next instruction was even stranger: whatever she did, she couldn’t tell her parents she was coming.

“Get on a plane home” appeared on Claire’s phone while she was floating peacefully in her cousin’s pool in Florida. The message came from an unknown number, followed by an even stranger warning: don’t tell your parents you’re coming. Claire read it four times, trying to convince herself it was a wrong number, a scam, or someone’s idea of a joke. She was seconds from deleting it when another text appeared—and suddenly the situation felt frighteningly personal.

“This is not a mistake, Claire. Please come.” Whoever was sending the messages knew her name. Claire climbed from the pool, dripping water onto the hot concrete, and quickly asked who was contacting her. The reply didn’t come immediately. She watched the typing dots appear, disappear, and return before another unsettling message finally arrived: it was someone who had known her before her parents did.

Claire couldn’t make sense of that statement. Her parents were Martin and Elaine Ellison. She had baby photographs, birthday celebrations, and thousands of ordinary memories proving the life she’d always known. Yet something about the messages frightened her enough that she booked the next flight out of Orlando. When her cousin Emma asked what was wrong, Claire claimed there was a work emergency. She looked her cousin directly in the eye and lied without fully understanding why.

Claire shook throughout the flight, keeping her phone in her lap and its screen visible. Twice she nearly called her mother. Twice her thumb hovered over Elaine’s name before she remembered the warning: don’t tell your parents you’re coming.

Why would a stranger care whether her own mother knew she was flying home?

No additional messages arrived.

By the time Claire landed in Seattle, darkness had fallen. She walked off the jet bridge expecting uncertainty, but instead found three strangers standing near a window as though they’d been waiting specifically for her. There were no flowers or welcoming signs. Just a woman in a grey suit with two men beside her—and all three were staring directly at Claire.

The woman stepped forward and asked whether she was Claire Ellison.

Claire cautiously demanded to know who was asking. The woman introduced herself as Margaret Shaw, an attorney. The two men accompanying her were Daniel Price and Luis Romero, both investigators.

Claire’s mouth went dry.

She asked what they were investigating, but Margaret wouldn’t explain there in the airport. Instead, she softly asked Claire to come somewhere private.

Every instinct told Claire to run. She considered calling her father and doing exactly what the original message had warned her against. But Margaret looked exhausted, kind—and strangely sorry.

Something about that expression stopped Claire.

She followed the three strangers to a car.

No one spoke during the drive into the city. Claire watched Seattle pass outside the window while trying to read their expressions in the reflection. Margaret stared straight ahead. One investigator repeatedly checked his phone, then glanced toward Claire as though she were either a witness, a victim, or somehow both.

Eventually, they reached a dark downtown office building. They took Claire upstairs and led her into an empty conference room containing one long table.

In the center sat a single folder.

Claire took a seat while both investigators remained near the door. Margaret folded her hands and looked directly at her.

What she was about to tell Claire, she warned, would be very difficult to hear.

Claire told her to stop frightening her and simply say it.

Margaret took a breath.

Twenty-one years earlier, there had been a car accident outside Tacoma. A young couple had died.

But their five-month-old daughter had never been found.
