My son demanded I sign the papers after showing up at my house at 1 a.m. with his wife and a sledgehammer. As the blows splintered my front door, a quiet hand touched my shoulder from the darkness behind me.

My son demanded I sign the papers at one in the morning, but he wasn’t standing peacefully on my porch waiting for an answer. He had brought a sledgehammer. Hugh was asleep when the first violent blow slammed into his front door just after the grandfather clock chimed one. At 68, after decades of hockey injuries and concrete work through Calgary winters, he couldn’t move as quickly as he once had. Before he could fully understand what was happening, another heavier strike crashed against the wood.

Then Hugh heard the voice outside. It was Brennan, his 38-year-old son, screaming at him to open the door. Hugh had heard that angry tone when Brennan was a teenager and didn’t get his way, but this time something was different. There was a coldness underneath his son’s voice that frightened him. The Christmas tree was still standing in the living room even though January had arrived. Margaret, Hugh’s wife, would have taken it down by Boxing Day, but she had been gone for fourteen months, and grief had left Hugh unable to deal with many reminders of the life they’d shared.

Another blow struck the door. Then Hugh heard his daughter-in-law urging Brennan to break it open. As Hugh stood there listening, he suddenly felt a light hand touch his shoulder from behind. A man alone at night might have screamed, but Hugh recognized that touch. It belonged to someone he’d known for 65 years. His brother Garrett was standing behind him in an old grey house coat, white hair messy from sleep and glasses crooked on his face. More importantly, Garrett was holding a phone—and it was already recording.

Garrett quietly warned Hugh not to open the door yet. He wanted to handle what was happening. Hugh had almost forgotten that his brother was staying with him for the weekend after driving down from Saskatoon. Hugh had recently fallen while clearing ice from the back steps, and Garrett had refused to let him remain alone.

Now Garrett seemed strangely prepared.

He told Hugh that this was what they’d been waiting for. Hugh didn’t understand what he meant, but Garrett gave him simple instructions: open the door slowly and don’t say anything. Let Brennan and his wife do the talking.

The pounding continued. Wood around the deadbolt was beginning to splinter.

For Hugh, the sight was almost impossible to reconcile with his memories. The person wielding that sledgehammer was the same boy he’d taught to skate on the pond behind his parents’ farm. Hugh had put him through engineering school at the University of Alberta and even helped with the down payment when Brennan and his wife bought their first home.

Yet now his son demanded I sign the papers while standing outside the home with a sledgehammer.

Hugh walked toward the front door in his slippers. Garrett remained several steps behind him, holding the phone low while keeping its camera pointed toward what was about to happen. Hugh removed the chain, turned the deadbolt, and opened the door.

Brennan stood on the porch in the freezing cold without a coat, wearing only a black hoodie. The sledgehammer rested in his right hand. His wife stood behind him with her own phone raised and its camera pointed directly at Hugh’s face.

Hugh followed Garrett’s instructions and remained quiet.

Brennan pushed his way inside and announced that Hugh was going to sign some papers. His wife told Hugh they’d tried to do things the easy way. Hugh immediately noticed something unsettling: after twelve years of calling him Dad, she suddenly called him Hugh.

Then Brennan ordered his father to sit at the kitchen table.

Finally, he revealed what this midnight visit was really about.

They needed to talk about the family cabin.
