My sister-in-law threatened me at funeral while I stood nine weeks pregnant beside my husband’s grave, then one violent shove nearly sent me into the dirt beside his casket. But when someone in the family quietly warned me not to sign anything she put in front of me, I realized the threat at the cemetery might only be the beginning.

My sister-in-law threatened me at funeral while I stood beside my husband’s freshly lowered casket, nine weeks pregnant and barely able to comprehend that he was gone. Margaret leaned close and demanded that I sign some papers that night, warning that otherwise she’d make sure I joined him. Before I could process the threat, she shoved me hard enough to send the November sky spinning as my knees struck the edge of the grave.

For one horrifying second, I thought I was going into the grave. Then elderly Pastor Brennan caught the back of my coat and pulled me away from the edge. The mourners gasped, but Margaret had already stepped away in her expensive black Chanel coat. Calmly, she announced that I’d slipped because the ground was uneven, as though nothing had happened.

I knelt in the cold grass with my dress torn at the knee and blood soaking through my stockings. When I looked at Margaret, I didn’t see uncontrolled anger in her face. I saw calculation. My ribs hurt, my hands shook, and instinctively I pressed a palm against my stomach, terrified for the nine-week-old baby my husband would never get to meet.

Pete had been dead for only six days. He was 34 and had been killed when his pickup crashed against the median on Route 71 outside Mansfield. He had been returning from a contractor job in Columbus when everything went wrong. Now the man I’d expected to grow old beside was being buried, and his own sister had nearly sent me into his grave with him.

Pastor Brennan helped me toward the funeral car, but I couldn’t stop watching Margaret. She had joined my mother-in-law, Patricia, beneath a cypress tree. Their heads were close together, and Patricia simply nodded while Margaret spoke.

I should have called the police immediately. But I was 28, pregnant, bruised, exhausted, and grieving the love of my life. My own parents were gone, and Pete’s relatives had become the only family I had left. Patricia had even made a quilt for our wedding, while Margaret had once stood beside me as my maid of honor.

That history made what had just happened almost impossible to understand.

The reception took place at Patricia’s house in Bexley, where people offered condolences while I sat in the formal living room with an ice pack against my injured knee. Across the room, Margaret moved effortlessly among the mourners. The sister-in-law threatened me at funeral only hours earlier, yet now she appeared perfectly composed, telling neighbors how devastated she was while dabbing at eyes that remained completely dry.

Then Pete’s father, Dale, approached me.

The retired surgeon sat carefully beside me and placed a glass of ginger ale on the table. He asked about my knee, and I told him it was fine even though it wasn’t. Dale didn’t immediately respond. Instead, he studied me with the same warm hazel eyes I’d loved in his son.

Then his voice dropped.

He told me not to sign anything Margaret put in front of me—not that night, not the next day, not ever—until he personally told me it was safe.

I stared at him.

Dale knew.

He had heard what Margaret said beside the grave.

And judging by the warning in his voice, whatever Margaret wanted me to sign was dangerous enough that my father-in-law was suddenly afraid of what his own daughter might do next.
