After My Wife’s Funeral, I Never Told My Son About The Tobermory Cabin Or The $340,000 She Left Me. Six Weeks Later…

By StoryStream Editorial

After my wife died, I thought I had lost the person who knew me better than anyone. Then her private attorney revealed she had secretly left me $340,000 and a cabin I never knew existed. I soon realized my wife had been planning for what would happen after her death.

On the morning of Helen’s funeral, Mark wore the blue tie she had always hated. Maybe he chose it because he could still imagine her scrunching her nose and teasing him about looking like an old courthouse lawyer. But after thirty-eight years of marriage, Helen was gone—and the silence inside that church felt louder than anything Mark had experienced in sixty-three years.

Their son, Reed, sat beside him in the front pew. Tall and broad-shouldered, he had Helen’s jaw and Mark’s stubbornness. He kept patting his father’s knee with a strange, controlled affection, and Mark quietly noticed him checking his phone twice during the eulogy.

Mark said nothing. Helen had always told him that he noticed too much and spoke too little. She considered it a flaw. Sitting there beside their son, Mark was beginning to wonder whether it might actually be a gift.

The days following Helen’s funeral blurred together.

Neighbors brought casseroles Mark barely touched. Patrice, a retired schoolteacher who lived nearby, visited three times in four days. On her third visit, she sat across from Mark at the kitchen table and gently asked whether he had thought about what came next.

Mark had buried his wife only eleven days earlier.

As far as he was concerned, what came next was finishing his coffee.

But Patrice’s question stayed with him.

Helen and Mark had spent thirty-eight years together. They had built their lives inside a four-bedroom colonial in Millbrook, Ohio. It was where they had raised Reed, celebrated birthdays, argued, and spent six years debating a leaking roof before finally repairing it.

It contained almost everything Mark associated with his marriage.

What he didn’t know was that Helen had deliberately kept something enormous from him.

Three weeks after the funeral, Mark received a call from Gerald Foss.

Gerald wasn’t their attorney.

He had been Helen’s attorney.

Mark hadn’t even known she had one.

Gerald explained that Helen had left precise instructions: he was not to contact Mark until at least twenty-one days after her death.

That sounded exactly like Helen.

Then Gerald revealed the first secret.

Helen had maintained a personal account in her name alone containing $340,000.

She had left all of it to Mark.

But that wasn’t everything.

There was also documentation for a property.

A cabin.

Mark initially didn’t even recognize the location when Gerald named it: Tobermory, Ontario, Canada.

Helen had purchased the cabin four years earlier.

She had paid cash.

Mark sat stunned as another memory suddenly took on an entirely different meaning. Four years earlier, Helen had begun taking what she called her “solo weekends.”

He had never questioned them.

Now his wife was gone, an attorney he never knew existed was telling him about hundreds of thousands of dollars and a secret property—and Mark was beginning to realize Helen had been preparing something for years.
