At 62, Walt Danvers wasn’t sick, slowing down, or planning to retire. He still arrived at Danvers Plumbing and Mechanical before seven most mornings and knew his company down to the smallest detail. But apparently, his daughter Megan had decided his working days were over—and Walt discovered her plan at a retirement dinner he didn’t even know was being held for him.
Walt had gone to the Omaha steakhouse believing Megan was taking him and his wife Ruth out to celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary. Megan had been trying harder lately, so Walt decided to appreciate the gesture rather than question it.
But when they arrived, Megan and her fiancé Trent were already waiting. Trent was even wearing a jacket—something Walt had seen him do only twice in two years. Then Megan announced they had a surprise.
Walt hated surprises.
Still, he sat down, ordered an iced tea, and let them proceed with whatever they had apparently spent the afternoon rehearsing.
For forty minutes, everything was suspiciously normal.
Trent asked about fishing. Megan talked to Ruth about the garden. Nobody mentioned Danvers Plumbing and Mechanical.
That told Walt exactly what the dinner was really about.
Then dessert arrived.
Megan tapped a spoon against her glass and stood. She announced that the evening wasn’t only about her parents’ anniversary. It was also about a “new chapter.”
Then she reached beside her chair and produced a leather folder.
According to Megan, the family had been discussing Walt slowing down for a long time. Walt immediately looked at Ruth.
She looked completely confused.
That answered one question.
Apparently, “the family” meant Megan and Trent.
Megan continued her speech, telling everyone that after 35 years Walt had earned the right to enjoy what he’d built. Complete strangers at nearby tables actually began applauding.
People were congratulating Walt on retiring before Walt himself knew he’d retired.
Then Trent stood beside Megan, wrapped an arm around her and gave Walt his polished smile.
They were ready to “take it from here.”
Walt calmly asked what exactly Trent intended to take.
The company.
Megan quickly insisted they weren’t pushing her father out. He would still be involved.
Walt asked how involved.
There was a hesitation.
Then Trent supplied the answer: Walt could have a chairman-type role. Advisory. Perhaps come in one or two mornings a week.
Walt looked down at the steak he’d barely finished.
It had cost seventy dollars, and he wasn’t about to let perfectly good meat go to waste simply because his daughter had temporarily lost her mind.
So he cut another piece.
Chewed.
Swallowed.
Then Walt finally asked the question neither Megan nor Trent seemed prepared for.
“Who owns Danvers Plumbing and Mechanical?”
