My brother announced that 34 relatives would be spending five days at my house, expecting me to provide everything, but he had no idea how seriously I would take protecting my property.

Family reunion is at your place. 34 people, 5 days. You’re covering food and drink. That was the message my older brother sent me, without asking a single question or offering even the smallest courtesy. Apparently, my home had become the official family vacation destination, and my kitchen had been promoted to a full-service cafeteria without my permission. I stared at the message for about thirty seconds, trying to decide whether my brother had completely lost his mind or simply assumed I’d surrender like always. Eventually, I typed a short response: I couldn’t host because I was renovating.

The interesting part was that I wasn’t actually renovating anything. Unless changing my gate code, disabling old remotes, installing exterior cameras, and arranging private security counted as home improvements. In that case, I was about to undertake the most important renovation of my life.

I’m Emma, thirty-six years old, and I own a four-bedroom house with a swimming pool on approximately an acre and a half outside town. It’s comfortable, spacious, and peaceful, but certainly not the enormous mansion my relatives like to imagine. Unfortunately, having extra space has always made my property a convenient target for family gatherings.

My brother Nate is forty and has an extraordinary talent for treating other people’s belongings as communal resources. If someone owns a truck, he starts referring to it as the family truck. If someone has a vacation cabin, he assumes everyone should have access. And because I have a pool, he seems convinced my house should function as a private resort for our entire extended family.

For years, I’d hosted birthdays, graduation celebrations, holiday lunches, and summer cookouts. At first, I enjoyed having everyone together. Most of my relatives are perfectly pleasant, and I genuinely like spending time with them.

The trouble was that Nate never respected the difference between being invited and taking control.

Whenever I agreed to host, he invited additional guests without consulting me. He volunteered bedrooms, encouraged people to bring dogs, and casually expanded the gathering as though he owned the property himself.

One particularly memorable incident happened during my mother’s birthday cookout. I walked into my living room and discovered a stranger named Keith sleeping on my couch.

I’d never met Keith.

Apparently, he worked with my cousin and therefore qualified as practically family. The next morning, he ate three of my eggs and walked away wearing one of my towels over his shoulders.

Experiences like that eventually convinced me to establish some boundaries.

The previous year, I’d told everyone I was taking a break from hosting major gatherings. Small dinners were fine. A birthday celebration with ten people might be manageable.

But thirty-four people for five days?

That wasn’t a casual family gathering. It was an entire logistical operation.

Nate knew I’d made this decision, which made his latest announcement even more unbelievable.

I called him immediately and asked whether he was joking.

He sounded genuinely confused.

When I explained that thirty-four people wouldn’t be staying at my house, he laughed and claimed nobody had said everyone would sleep there. Some relatives, he suggested, might book hotels.

Then he started explaining the sleeping arrangements he’d already planned.

Our parents would take my guest bedroom. Aunt Linda and Uncle Rob would probably use the downstairs room. The children could sleep on air mattresses, while younger cousins would manage with sleeping bags.

He had assigned rooms inside a house he didn’t own.

I told him no.

He responded that everyone had already been invited.

I said he’d have to uninvite them.

According to Nate, that would be embarrassing.

I reminded him that the embarrassment would be his, not mine.

Then he used his favorite argument: family should help family.

He explained that relatives were excited, several had already requested vacation time, and cousins were planning long drives to attend.

As if that weren’t enough, Aunt Linda had apparently purchased an enormous inflatable flamingo for my pool.

I couldn’t understand why anyone thought a giant pool toy would change my answer.

I told Nate again that the reunion wasn’t happening at my house.

He suggested I sleep on it.

But after ending the call, I had a growing suspicion that my brother wasn’t going to accept my decision nearly as easily as he should have.
