On FaceTime With Her Mother, She Laughed And Said, Relax Mom, Just Having Fun. There’s Zero Chance I’d Actually Marry Someone Who Puts…

I came home early from work expecting an ordinary afternoon, but one conversation between my fiancée and her mother revealed what she really thought about marrying me.

There’s zero chance I’d actually marry someone who puts up drywall for a pay cheque. Those were the words I heard my fiancée, Laura, say to her mother during a FaceTime call, unaware that I was standing outside our apartment door. Until that moment, I believed we were building a future together. I’d spent eight years working construction, learning the trade from the ground up after high school. Drywall installation had become my specialty. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was honest, paid well, and allowed me to support the life we shared. I had never imagined that the profession I took pride in would become something the woman I loved privately mocked.

That Tuesday began like any other workday. A severe thunderstorm warning forced our foreman to shut down the construction site by two in the afternoon. I texted Laura to say I was heading home, but she didn’t respond. I assumed she was busy at the insurance office where she worked as an underwriter. When I reached our apartment complex around three, I noticed her sedan parked in its usual spot. Apparently, she’d come home early too.

I collected my thermos and work bag from the truck, climbed the stairs, and approached our second-floor apartment. My boots made little noise against the carpet. Years of carefully navigating construction sites had taught me to move quietly, even while wearing heavy work shoes. I reached for my keys, but before I could unlock the door, I heard Laura speaking animatedly to her mother.

She was laughing. At first, I thought they were discussing something harmless. Then I heard Laura tell her mother to relax because she was only having fun. She said there was no possibility she’d marry a man who installed drywall for a living. She had standards, she insisted.

My hand froze around the keys. I stood motionless, struggling to understand what I’d just heard. But Laura wasn’t finished. She explained that I was convenient for the moment because I helped pay the rent and handled repairs around the apartment. Our engagement, she added, kept her father from introducing her to his wealthy golfing acquaintances.

I listened as the woman I’d planned to marry described our relationship as a temporary arrangement. She assured her mother that she was already looking for something better. There was a man in the corporate department at her workplace who earned six figures, and they’d been talking.

Once Laura found a better option, she planned to leave. Until then, she saw no reason to disrupt the comfortable arrangement we had.

Her mother said something I couldn’t understand. Laura laughed again and explained that I suspected nothing because I was too busy working with construction materials to notice what was happening around me.

She called me a simple man with simple needs.

There’s zero chance I’d actually marry someone who puts up drywall for a pay cheque. The sentence kept repeating in my mind as I realized she wasn’t embarrassed by a single detail of my job. She was embarrassed by the person she believed I was.

I stepped backward from the door. My hands were trembling, and the hallway suddenly felt unbearably warm. I had expected to return home to the woman I loved. Instead, I had discovered that she was planning a future that didn’t include me.

And she still had no idea I’d heard every word.
