My Brother Told Me To Get A Real Job At The Exact Gala Where 200 Executives Were About To Find Out He’d Been Living In His Brother’s Shadow…

My twin brother spent years treating me like a failure because I preferred working with engines instead of chasing corporate status. He never imagined how little he understood about the brother he had always looked down on.

My Brother Told Me to Get a Real Job at an industry gala where nearly two hundred executives had gathered, completely unaware of how much he had underestimated me. My name is Mason, I’m thirty-two years old, and my twin brother Liam and I couldn’t be more different. Growing up, Liam was treated like the family’s chosen son, while I was the disappointment nobody quite knew what to do with. He was comfortable in expensive clothes and country clubs. I preferred spending weekends rebuilding transmissions, taking engines apart, and figuring out how complicated machines worked. Whenever we attended family dinners, I could practically feel my parents wondering why I hadn’t turned out more like him. It wasn’t always that way between us. When we were six or seven, we were inseparable, building forts, riding bicycles, and sharing the ordinary adventures that made being twins special.

Everything began changing in middle school. Liam discovered he was talented at sports and making friends, while I discovered that I loved understanding how things worked. By high school, we were almost strangers who happened to have the same face and live under the same roof. Liam became the varsity quarterback, earned good grades, and dressed like someone already preparing for a successful corporate career. I spent my free time tearing down engines and fabricating custom automotive parts. Nobody in my family believed those interests would lead anywhere. I still remember rebuilding my first carburetor when I was fourteen. I spent an entire weekend carefully cleaning its components, studying their functions, and putting everything back together. When I finally finished, I was so excited that I rushed into the living room to show my parents what I had accomplished.

They were watching highlights from Liam’s football game for the third time. I held up the polished carburetor and proudly told them what I had made. My mother barely looked at it before turning her attention back to Liam’s performance on the field. My father didn’t even lift his head. He simply told me to put the greasy thing away before I damaged the carpet. I stood there holding something I had worked incredibly hard to rebuild, realizing that neither of them cared enough to ask a single question. That moment stayed with me. It wasn’t really about a carburetor. It was about how easily my family celebrated Liam’s achievements while dismissing mine. And as we grew older, their attitude only became more obvious.

At almost every family gathering, my mother asked when I planned to find a proper career. My father would nod with that familiar disappointed expression, while Liam sat nearby looking thoroughly entertained.

He enjoyed reminding everyone that some people had ambition and others were apparently content tinkering in garages.

My Brother Told Me to Get a Real Job wasn’t an isolated insult. It was part of a pattern that had followed me for years.

The most frustrating part was that my family acted as though their comments came from concern. They believed they were helping me understand the importance of choosing a respectable profession.

But I already knew what I wanted to build. I could see possibilities in automotive engineering that they had never bothered to understand.

Then came a Thanksgiving dinner shortly after college.

Liam arrived in a brand-new Audi, wearing an expensive cashmere sweater and announcing that he’d secured a prestigious corporate position with a major truck manufacturer.

Everyone seemed impressed.

He described his title, corner office, expense account, and company car before turning toward me with a familiar smirk.

Then he asked whether I was still fixing up old junkers.

My father laughed and suggested that Liam might be able to get me a job in the mailroom.

The entire extended family was listening.

And as their laughter spread around the Thanksgiving table, I realized they still had absolutely no idea what I was trying to accomplish.
