My Boss Laid Me Off For Being Replaced By Automation After 20 Years In The Company. The System Does Your Job Now, He Laughed During My Exit Interview.

After twenty years of building the systems that kept my company running, my boss laughed as he told me automation had made me obsolete, but he had no idea what I understood about the technology replacing me.

My Boss Replaced Me With Automation after I spent twenty years building the very systems he believed could now perform my job without me. My name is Jonah, I’m forty-seven years old, and I had devoted most of my professional life to the automation infrastructure at Vellridge Studios in Portland, Oregon. I sat across from Gregory in the conference room while he leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, wearing the smug expression I had seen him practice before. He told me the system could do my job now. Then he laughed. He called it efficiency, as though dismissing someone who had given two decades to the company was simply another business improvement. I watched him carefully, remembering how much of that technology existed because of my own work.

I had written the code behind the integrations, workflows, and automation scripts that saved the company millions of dollars every year. Gregory knew exactly how much I had contributed because I had trained him when he transferred from sales three years earlier. Back then, he had asked questions like an eager student, depending on me to explain how everything worked. Now he sat in the director’s chair and told me I was no longer necessary. He pushed a severance packet across the table and thanked me for my service. The offer was two weeks of pay after twenty years of work. I stared at the paperwork, thinking about all the nights I had spent keeping the company’s digital infrastructure functioning. Two weeks felt like an insult disguised as appreciation.

Gregory continued explaining that technology had moved forward. The new system, he said, could handle everything I used to do without requiring benefits, vacations, or a salary. I could tell he expected me to argue, plead for another opportunity, or become emotional. Instead, I simply told him I understood. He blinked, apparently surprised that I wasn’t fighting his decision. Then he instructed me to clean out my desk and informed me that security would escort me out at five o’clock. I nodded and stood. My hands remained steady as I walked back toward the office where I had spent so many years solving problems nobody else wanted to handle.

I collected my belongings in a cardboard box. There were photographs of my daughter, a coffee mug she had made for me in fourth grade, and a small cactus my ex-wife had given me before our divorce.

Each object reminded me of a different part of my life.

I left the plaques and certificates hanging on the wall. Once, those awards had made me proud. Now they seemed strangely meaningless.

At four thirty, I logged into my workstation for the final time.

I opened my private backup drive and copied three folders containing documentation, source code, and access credentials. Years of technical knowledge could fit inside a device small enough to disappear into my jacket pocket.

I ejected the drive and logged out.

At five o’clock exactly, security escorted me to my car. Gregory watched from his office window, but I didn’t look up.

My Boss Replaced Me With Automation, and I drove home without saying another word to him.

My apartment felt unusually small that evening. I set the cardboard box on the kitchen counter, poured myself a glass of whisky, and sat at my desk.

The backup drive was right in front of me.

I stared at it for a long moment, thinking about Gregory’s confident smile and the system he believed could operate without my help.

There was something about that system he didn’t understand.

And because I had built it, I knew exactly where its weaknesses were hiding.
