Four terrified girls hid under my table and begged me to be their dad, turning an ordinary moment in a café into something I would never forget. It started when a small hand suddenly grabbed my pant leg beneath the table. I didn’t move. Twelve years in my business had taught me to freeze first and react second. When I finally looked down, I discovered four little girls squeezed beneath my chair, hiding as though their lives depended on remaining unseen.

The oldest appeared to be around ten years old, while the youngest clutched a stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest. Their fear was unmistakable. The oldest girl whispered that I needed to pretend to be their father because someone was coming to take them. My name is Julian Vance, and I’m not accustomed to people approaching me without permission. Most people in the city know enough about my reputation to keep their distance. Yet these children had somehow decided that hiding beneath my table was their safest option.

Before I could ask another question, the café door chimed. Two men entered, wearing cheap suits and carrying themselves with the unmistakable confidence of people accustomed to intimidating others. Their posture was careless, and they weren’t concealing their weapons particularly well. They approached my table and announced that they were looking for some children. The larger man claimed those children belonged to his boss. I slowly lifted my coffee cup, took a sip, and considered what that statement meant.

I placed my cup back on the table and told the men they were speaking about my daughters.

Then I instructed them to leave.

When I mentioned Victor Thorne and warned that I could personally report his men’s behavior toward Vanguard Intelligence, the larger man’s expression changed immediately.

He recognized the name.

Everyone in the city knew Vanguard Intelligence, and apparently neither man wanted to explain why he’d threatened its owner.

They walked away without another word.

Only after they disappeared did the oldest girl crawl out from beneath my table.

Her name was Clara.

She didn’t cry, thank me, or even seem relieved. Instead, she reached into her backpack and removed a leather journal.

She pushed it toward me with the seriousness of someone carrying a responsibility far beyond her years.

Clara said her mother believed the journal explained why her father had been killed.

Her mother had instructed her to give it to someone who wasn’t afraid of the dark.

I stared at the journal, realizing that whatever had frightened these children was far more complicated than a chance encounter with two threatening men.

Ordinarily, I should have called the police.

But Victor Thorne was powerful enough to send armed men into a café in broad daylight. I couldn’t assume the local authorities would protect the girls.

So I made a different decision.

I brought all four children to my own building, a heavily secured property rising eighty floors above the city.

It was the one place I believed they could remain beyond the immediate reach of the men pursuing them.

Four terrified girls hid under my table only hours earlier, and now their safety depended on what my team could discover inside Clara’s mysterious journal.

By midnight, my analysts had decoded its contents.

The information concerned Thomas Thorne, Clara’s father, who had supposedly died in a car accident three years earlier.

He had developed an invention connected to a patent worth an extraordinary amount of money.

And someone within his own family had wanted control of it.

The more I learned, the more dangerous the situation appeared.

If Clara’s mother had been right about her husband’s death, the four girls weren’t simply running from strangers—they were carrying a secret that someone powerful was desperate to keep buried.
