The police asking about my missing husband was the last thing I expected when my doorbell rang at 11:30 that morning. Standing on my porch were two officers, a tall man with a mustache and a younger woman whose hair was pulled back neatly. The man asked whether I was Mrs. Anastasia Hawkins. I confirmed my identity, still wondering why the police had come to my home. He introduced himself as Officer Dominic Scott and the woman as Officer Paula Haynes. They explained that they needed to discuss something important. I invited them into the living room and offered coffee, but neither accepted. Their serious expressions made me increasingly uncomfortable. Then they told me they were there about my husband, Marcus. I immediately assured them everything was fine. Marcus had left for work that morning, just as he always did. I couldn’t imagine what could possibly require two police officers to visit our home.
Officer Paula exchanged a glance with her partner before explaining that Marcus had been reported missing. The report had been filed by his own mother, Cecilia Hawkins. I stared at them in disbelief. Missing? That was impossible. Marcus had kissed me goodbye at 7:30 that very morning. Officer Dominic opened his notepad and explained that Cecilia claimed she hadn’t heard from her son in four days. She had contacted his workplace the previous day, only to learn that he supposedly hadn’t been there all week. I insisted something was wrong with their information. Marcus worked at Meijer & Associates and had recently been busy with an important project. He left home every morning and returned at his usual time. Nothing about his routine suggested that anything was unusual.
But Paula calmly explained that they had already contacted his employer. According to the office, Marcus hadn’t reported to work since the previous Thursday. I immediately reached for my phone and called him, expecting him to answer and clear up the misunderstanding. Instead, the call went straight to voicemail. I tried to explain that Marcus had been home with me every evening, talking about meetings and describing his workday. Just yesterday, he’d arrived home at 6:15. We had eaten lasagna together while he mentioned a client meeting that had run longer than expected. Everything had seemed completely normal. How could the police be telling me that my husband had been missing from work for days?

The officers continued asking questions. Paula wanted to know when I had last spoken with my mother-in-law. I explained that we were supposed to have dinner at Cecilia’s house on Sunday, but Marcus told me she’d canceled because she wasn’t feeling well.
Paula looked puzzled. According to Cecilia, that dinner had never been scheduled. Another detail I thought I understood suddenly made no sense.
Then the officers asked to look around our home. I showed them our bedroom, pointing out Marcus’s clothes and toothbrush. Everything appeared exactly where it belonged.
But when Paula asked about his passport, I opened the drawer where we kept our important documents. His passport and birth certificate were gone. I was certain both had been there the previous week.
Soon, another unsettling detail emerged. A neighbor had reportedly seen Marcus loading bags into his car on Thursday afternoon, when I believed he was working.
I contacted his office again, desperate for an explanation. His assistant revealed that Marcus had requested personal leave for a family emergency.
The police asking about my missing husband was becoming something far more frightening than a simple misunderstanding.
*If Marcus had been coming home every night, why did everyone else seem to know something about his life that I didn’t?
