The afternoon my son revealed abuse at hockey practice began like any other day at the arena. I was sitting in the bleachers, watching thirteen-year-old Marcus practice with his hockey team, when an unexpected message appeared on my phone. It was from Marcus, who was sitting on the bench less than thirty feet away. His message was short: “Dad. Bathroom, now. Just you.” My stomach tightened immediately. Marcus never used his phone during practice because Coach Williams enforced a strict no-phones policy. I looked through the glass and saw my son staring at his lap, his shoulders hunched forward. Something about his posture frightened me. I texted back, asking whether everything was okay. The typing indicator appeared, vanished, and returned before his answer finally arrived. He begged me to come alone and not tell anyone. I abandoned my coffee and hurried toward the locker rooms, trying to control the fear building in my chest. Whatever Marcus needed to tell me, he was clearly terrified of someone finding out.
When I entered the bathroom, Marcus was standing beside the sinks with his back toward me. He was still wearing his practice jersey, number seventeen. His hands gripped the sink so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. I asked what was wrong, but he wouldn’t turn around. Instead, he told me he needed to show me something. Before doing so, he demanded a promise: I couldn’t panic, make a scene, or confront anyone in front of the team. Hearing my own child speak with that much fear made my heart pound harder. I moved closer and promised to stay calm, even though I had no idea what I was about to see.
Marcus slowly lifted the back of his jersey, bringing his undershirt with it. I froze. Purple and yellow bruises covered his lower back and ribs. Some looked recent, dark and painful, while others had already faded into a sickly green. Then I noticed the marks along his side. They were shaped like fingerprints, unmistakable evidence that someone had grabbed him with tremendous force. For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, and somewhere beyond the bathroom walls, a whistle sounded from the ice. Everything outside that room continued normally while my world seemed to stop. I finally managed to ask who had done this to him.

Marcus answered quietly. Assistant coach Brennan. Derek Brennan was someone I recognized immediately. I had met him repeatedly, shaken his hand at the season opener, and watched him help coach Marcus’s team to regionals the previous spring. Other parents admired him. Everyone seemed to believe he was an excellent coach. Yet my son was standing before me covered in bruises.
As Marcus explained what had happened, I struggled to remain composed. For six weeks, Brennan had been keeping him after practices when the other players left. He called the sessions discipline training, claiming Marcus needed to become tougher if he wanted to play AAA hockey the following year. He forced Marcus through extra drills and painful wall sits while striking him in the ribs. One session had lasted twenty minutes, leaving Marcus feeling close to passing out.
The more I listened, the more frightening everything became. My son revealed abuse at hockey practice because he could no longer endure what was happening behind closed doors. But when I asked whether anyone else knew, Marcus gave an answer I wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom does.”
I stared at his reflection in the mirror. He had told her three weeks earlier and shown her the bruises. Instead of protecting him, she had defended the coach’s methods and warned Marcus that telling me could damage his hockey future.
Then Marcus revealed something even more disturbing about what had happened the previous day.
